“Lovely view from shared balcony”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2012

This is a comfortable hotel with Japanese finishing, located in the heart of Japantown across from the Japanese Center. Front desk staff are courteous and helpful, though not always aware of people's needs. On more than one occasion, we received calls from our Virgin Holidays rep, but the front desk failed to help us out.

Our room was spacious and the beds were comfy. The bathroom was separated into three sections: toilet, mirror & sink, and then a small 'wet room' for washing your feet, bathing and showering. The tub was small and deep, and the facilities easy to use. The room was clean throughout, though I had a couple of yellow pillows that I avoided using!

We enjoyed a fantastic view of Japantown and the Peace Pagoda from our room on the 13th floor. We could hear the traffic by night, but it didn't bother our sleep. Our balcony, with a sliding glass door, was connected to our neighbour's balcony, so we made certain to lock the door and close the Japanese screen doors whenever we left the room. On one occasion, I had to politely ask our neighbours for quiet when they were talking and smoking on the adjoining balcony, and they were apologetic.

There's a business feel to this hotel, which accommodates conferences (we think). There's a nice mix of people walking around and good, free wifi available in rooms and lobby. There's a safe available in the room, too.

There's a local Safeway for supplies, and handy bus routes for getting around the city. We recommend the 7-day CityPass, which is great value for all muni transport, and even has vouchers for local attractions.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that's high up, perhaps past 10 floors, as the views overlooking the Peace Pagoda...

In a nice location within Japantown. Makes shopping and dining very convenient. The rooms are a little bit dated though and on the smallish side. With 2 twin beds, you are within a few inches of the window on one side and the bathroom entrance on the other...by the way, the bathroom has no doors seperating the vanity area and the bed (due to lack of space) so if one person needs to use the bathroom, well, the entire room light is turned on. Better suited for a single bed (? have doors on bathroom). A very interesting setup is that the balcony is shared with some other guest next door (no divide) so if they decide to hang outside their/your balcony and your bed is within a few inches of the balcony door, well guess what...you can hear the entire conversation. Luckily, our balcony neighbors called it quit at an early hour, so no major disturbance for us, but I can see if this could be a problem. If I had a noisy neighbor, this could easily have been a 2 star rating. In their defense, I'm not sure if this setup is throughout the hotel or are we just unlucky to get this type of room...might want to ask when checking in. Parking is very convenient. Room was clean and well maintained.

Room Tip: Inquire about shared balcony when booking. If you are traveling with more than 2 adults, get two ro...

Enjoyed my stay this past week in the Hotel Kabuki; it was fun to explore the area. The location is a good one for visiting SF -- Japantown has interesting shopping and it's within walking distance of some good restaurants. Comfy beds, nice room although not without quirks (see below).

The breakfast arrangements at the hotel were less than ideal. Unlike many hotels there is no coffee or tea in the lobby (although you can make coffee in your room if you like that stuff). The hotel restaurant has breakfast, but the only choice is the buffet (which is very expensive -> $15 plus). If you only want a muffin, you basically have to go somewhere else; the Japantown mall has bakeries, but they don't open until latish (9am).

Our room also had a weird arrangement with the windows-- it was a plate glass window, then blackout shades, then a Japanese wooden screen arrangement on the inside. This meant that closing the shades for the evening involved a complicated sort of dance to open & close the screens so as to get at the drapes. Even this wasn't entirely successful (drapes would not close all the way).

This is one of two hotels in the Japantown area, so of course the best place to stay for the Cherry Blossom Festival.
The hotel is very nice and clean. I've never encountered any problems.
The bed is absolutely the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. I slept great!!! I want one for my own home!
The only issue was the shower head - watch out and get your back exfoliated!

Japantown is a quiet, charming location convenient for for buses to Golden Gate State Park as well as a walk or bus to Chinatown, etc. Very clean room with helpful staff. Beautiful grounds. Free internet.
