Owner description: This electric neighborhood of 100,000 people is not to be missed, and it's not hard to find: listen for the clack of mahjongg tiles and nose out the salty spicy squid.

Chinatown is something all our out of town guests want to see. It's busy, crowded and full of cheap souvenir shops, but it's still a good place to take a walk. Go up Grant Street and when you've had enough of the souvenir vendors go over to Stockton Street for the walk back. That's where the stores the local shop in are located. You will see an amazing variety of vegetables, fruits, live fish and poultry. And bakeries. Amazing bakeries. Keep walking down Stockton street and you'll end up in Union Square.

We visited twice in the week we visited, the first time we came in from Fisherman's Wharf. Big mistake. Back side vendors were the stereotypical con job giving back the wrong change for a twenty, sub par potato pearls for $20 and up. (Seriously I buy Honora for the same price at TJ Maxx) Shops were dirty and the tea shops could not be bothered to say hello and I really didn't feel like busting out Pin Yin. The next time we came in from the Market St trolley, shops are cleaner and HONEST. Bummed we saw the seedy side. Markets are great for gorgeous cheap veggies but be prepared for mucho hills. We liked Japantown overall for it's cleanliness, bathrooms, elevators and friendly shop owners.

We used the public transportation system to get to Chinatown, which was a bit confusing...but quite interesting in that we saw all sorts of characters on the buses. Chinatown itself is a must see for all in the area...the architecture, the people, the hustle and bustle....we really enjoyed walking around and browsing in the shops. The wares are SUPER cheap too...the same shirts on alcatraz were a third of the price here, same with momentos of the Golden gate bridge etc. The shopkeepers can be a but pushy in some of the stores, but with so much competition I suppose they feel they have to be. A fun visit, and interesting to see places like bank of america and ymca in Chinese. Very cool

The sights and smells of Chinatown turned us away. It was a place that we were recommended to visit. We were just not prepared for the sights and smells that we encountered. Sorry, just not for us.
