Although I live in the city, love riding Cable Cars, and have passed by this many times, I had never visited the Cable Car Museum. I finally went in on a whim on my last cable car ride and I'm so glad I did. It's not a large museum, but it's also free admission. The actual working cables and spools are on display in a viewing area under the street and the museum answers all of the questions you have about how exactly the whole system works.

What's really incredible is that this "museum" is really the actual, working cable car garage. You are really just a visitor into the daily workings of the system, which makes it even more interesting.

Everything is very well explained and interesting. Since it's free and actually on the route of the cable cars, there's no reason not to go!

Disclosure: I just completed my third visit to this wonderful piece of history and I have to confess the cable car systems is still a magical mystery to me. But, beyond the nice demonstrations of what's going on under your feet when riding a car, there is an awe-inspiring coverage of the effects of the 1908 earthquake and subsequent fire. How San Franscisco ever recovered much less reconstructing the heart of it's extensive cable car systems is a real tribute to the spirit of the city.

Three cable car line intersect here so it is an easy on-off opportunity to visit a piece of history that is unique in the world. It's free but please consider donating

This is where you can watch all the cable cars turn around. All the underground cables come to this location. Children and adults will be fascinated.

we were told by a friend to stop in here, it was really interesting to see and understand the logistics before we rode one.

Well worth a visit if you have an interest in the cable cars, their history and how they operate. If I remember correctly, it's free of charge and we loved it.
