My husband and I stayed in Room #5 of the Black Friar Inn while visiting Acadia National Park last month. We were so happy with our room, parking, breakfast, and of course, Tom, our Innkeeper.
Parking was ample and free. We could see our car from our room. There was no need to move the car to see downtown Bar Harbor. Everything, including the grocery store, the beach to Bar Island, bicycle rentals, boat excursions and fine dining were all nearby. We loved the nice little English pub on the premises as well. And breakfast each morning (included with the cost of the room) was outstandingly crafted by Tom. I recommend the Tomelette along with multi-grain toast. The fruit was also exceptionally fresh and delicious.
On our Sunday arrival, the pub and dining room were closed, so we ventured out to the beach, to some of the local pubs and the tasting room of Bar Harbor Brewing Co. Everything was within easy walking distance.
Our room was clean and comfortable with the ability to open windows and allow the night air in. The linens were luxuriously soft (something I've never noticed at other hotels). We had room to sit and read, and we liked having a wi-fi connection in our room. We were able to view Room #4 on our arrival with its lovely spiral staircase to a sitting area. Room #4 is on the list for our next stay.
The first floor area had a lovely sitting room with fireplace, and Tom brought us down to the grotto where we could comfortably watch our Red Sox without the noise and crowds at the local bars. We also enjoyed a nice pan-seared tuna steak with wasabi appetizer at the pub along with a local craft brew.
Overall, we found the Black Friar Inn neat and clean with great food in a fine location and quite reasonably priced for the area. Tom has done a great job with the Inn, and we look forward to staying at the Black Friar again, perhaps in the off-season when we can enjoy cooler weather and a reduction in park traffic.
I highly recommend a visit to the Black Friar Inn.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- The Black Friar Inn and Pub is a hidden gem; once you find it we guarantee you will be back! Our three story building is mostly constructed from materials salvaged from the mansions that burned in the great fire of 1947. All of the finishing work in the Blackfriar was once part of the time when the steamboats greeted our shores and Bar Harbor was called Eden. Although there doesn't seem to be any new ghost here, you will occasionally feel residual energy coming from all around you. Especially if it's nighttime. And you're here. By yourself. Don't be frightened off, when you walk in our friendly and super accommodating staff is there to greet you, get you settled in and feeling at home. Chef Don does a superb job in our cozy kitchen whether you feel like a burger or a fine bottle of wine with a perfectly cooked steak. Jenny, Michelle, Taylor and Brittany are very capable barmaids with dynamite personalities and lots of specialty drinks to try. Fryer Tom is the heart of the Friar, the owner and innkeeper, he is laid back and has a wonderful hands-on approach to ownership. We are happy family here at the Blackfriar so come by, take a tour, grab a beer and let us make you feel like part of it! ... more less
