“Great bar”
Reviewed 5 October 2011

We stayed 20th September. As we had selected the cheapest small room we were pleasantly suprised that it was more than adequate for one night (must be used to staying in London Hotels). Breakfast was great, even better sitting in the conservatory / bar area looking out over the sea. Beautiful location and excellent little bar with a good wine selection, with generous measures.
I would return.

We had a remarkable experience at Balance Rock Inn. The staff was friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to make sure we were well taken care of. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated with many wonderful amenities. We looked forward to breakfast every morning partly because of the delicious food but mostly to see Reggie who was always quick with a greeting and a smile. This adorable Inn is also set amongst some of the most fantastic sites Maine has to offer. The mountains and shoreline are pristine and breathtaking. Our time at Balance Rock Inn was both relaxing and rejuvenating as well as sometimes exciting. We are already planning our next trip to Balance Rock Inn.

My husband and I went to the Balance Rock to spend our anniversary and everything was absolutely exceptional. We loved our ocean view suite (room #205) it was very cozy and romantic and we loved the working fire place. The breakfast is fabulous and the staff was so accommodating, you could tell they really cared. You receive so many amenities also...breakfast, cocktail hour, $15 towards drinks every night, and we also enjoyed the fire pit! Oh, I can't forget the views and location. It's breathtaking, you can hardly take yourself away from it! We did think that some of the common area carpets could be replaced...they were starting to show some age. Overall, it is a perfect place for a peaceful and romantic getaway.

The Balance Rock Inn is nestled down a quiet side street in the heart of Bar Harbor, and along a convenient waterfront walking path. Amenities were nice, and staff was exceptional. Loved the veranda bar (with $15 bar credit nightly), deck with fire pit, and upscale breakfast experience. The Select Comfort beds weren't as comfortable as I'd hoped, and were very noisy to adjust or move around in... but otherwise the place was clean, well-cared for, and nicely appointed. It felt like a very special, indulgent getaway! Oh, and it's extremely pet friendly, even offering to arrange for doggy day care!

Room Tip: The Carriage House is nice, but the main inn looks even nicer...

On our first family trip to Maine this summer, my husband thought he'd do something really nice for me and book us a very luxurious place to stay. He booked Balance Rock Inn online. (We tend to be very economical, not ones to splurge on ourselves easily.) We have two children (a 5-year-old & a 7-year-old) who usually sleep in bed with us, or on a couch, etc. in the room when we stay at hotels. Never have we ever had an issue with this. So, after traveling ALL THE WAY FROM HAWAII, we were, to say the least, exhausted. We arrived in Bar Harbor, and were so excited to stay in such fine accommodations. That is, until we tried to check in. We were bluntly told that we could not stay in the room that we'd booked because it could only sleep 2 people. (Mind you, the room had a couch, a huge king bed, and more than enough room, even on the floor!) We were told that we could pay $200 (on top of the $1000+ we'd already paid for 2 nights) more to sleep in the penthouse room for the one evening, but that the next evening, we had to find somewhere else to stay.

The clerk said she already talked to the manager, and that this was the only solution. So basically, after paying more than $1000 to stay there for 2 nights, we were going to have to pay $200 more, AND could only stay there for one night. Needless to say, this was not flying right by me. I felt so stressed out that I wanted to cry.

They threw out some kind of fire code issue as the reason for this. Fine. I can accept this. However, what is totally unacceptable is their lack of compassion or helpfulness in the situation. They were basically saying, "We will keep your money, but get out." At least that's the way we were made to feel. To be kind, to be generous, to be compassionate, they could've maybe reimbursed us for the night we would not be able to stay, so that we could have the money to pay for another hotel room elsewhere in Bar Harbor? They could've at least helped us find other accommodations? But they didn't. And we were made to feel totally unwelcome. And all the while, my two daughters were asking, "Why can't we stay here? Why can't we stay here?" Obviously, this establishment does not welcome families since apparently, most of their rooms only accommodate 2 people. Sad. We are passing this information on to all of our family and friends and colleagues, and anyone else who mentions they're going to Maine. They all think the way this was handled was absolutely unacceptable.

Unfortunately, I will always remember Bar Harbor for this sour experience since it pretty much tainted our stay.
