Roughly about 10 miles from the Abraham Lincoln Memorial is the Abraham Lincoln Boyhood home at Know Creek. So if in the area, visit both. The Federal employees (NPS) were very nice and could answer any questions you might have. You actually get to go inside the home which they set up with items to represent what life was like back doing this time. There are also many historical markers around this site that are worth reading. It is well worth the visit is you want to understand the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln or are a history buff.
A small parking lot is available. So, if you are towing an RV, it is hit or miss with parking. This place is free to visit. Public restrooms are available. You can take your time to read the signs and plaques. Park rangers are available.A reproduction of the cabin is located next to the building, and you may go inside.
Disappointingly, we visited when the main building was closed so we definitely lost out on some better context and information on the site. Absent the information center being open, it’s worth a very short visit because there is not a lot signage to explain the larger context of what the grounds mean. We visited the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Indiana and that was fascinating.
We spent a few hours here after stopping in the visitor center which is a historical tavern. A reconstructed cabin sits next to the visitor center and park employees said the cabin is where historians think the original cabin was. We walked the trail and went to Knob Creek which was low but had some water in it. The trail goes through the area where the Lincoln family grew pumpkins and corn. There are picnic tables and plenty of parking. Be aware of ticks because we found a couple on us afterward.
Even though the visitor center was closed, it was a nice stop to see where Lincoln grew up. Check first to see the center hours.
We had to stop here and see the Boyhood Home of Abraham Lincoln after visiting the Memorial. Great museum. Enjoyed walking around the property and went down to the creek where Lincoln almost drown.
