“Old Time Charm”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2012

Hotel Molokai was a charming, old-style hotel, with all the feel of real 'old' Hawaii. The little bungalow rooms are oddly shaped (?), but very clean and the beds are very comfortable. I believe this is the only hotel on the island, but is in a good location...rite on the ocean, and the restaurant has good food, reasonably priced. The only thing i did NOT like, was the floor-to-ceiling slat windows found in the bathroom (really?) leading right out to the entry door of the room. The back patio was nice, but again, there was another full length slats window, and the patio door latched with a wimpy chain lock. I dont think there is an abundance of crime on Molokai, but the room didnt feel like it was too private or secure.

Room Tip: I would ask for an upper room (not floor level) then maybe you wouldnt feel like everyone who walked...

Unless you are renting a private condo, there aren't many places to stay on Molokai. Hotel Molokai is quite adequate but nothing fancy. Although if you want fancy, I can't imagine why you'd even be visiting Molokai. Comfy beds, fabulous down pillows and high thread count sheets. Clean rooms. Lovely grounds. Plenty of hammocks for relaxing. Not many units so it never felt crowded. Very friendly people at the front desk. There are no ocean waves lulling you to sleep as the hotel is on the reef side of the island which breaks the waves from coming all the way to shore.

Room Tip: End units on second floor have interesting high ceiling architecture. Don't worry about being o...

The Hotel was such a pleasant experience. Beginning with the friendly greeting and attentive care by Sumi at the front desk. We enjoyed our stay immensely. The rooms were lovely, old Hawaiian style. We were right on the water and my Husband Bob got some great sunrise pictures, I slept in ;), we're on vacation, right? Very convenient to have a restaurant and bar right on the grounds. We enjoyed a great lunch. Mom & I were even able to eat gluten-free! Later we had cocktails under the stars, beautiful way to end a day full of Molokai adventures. There is also a very nice gift shop in the lobby. We only had 2 days on Molokai, but will be back when we can spend 4 or 5 days, and definitely stay at Hotel Molokai again!

Although pricey this is a charming small hotel. We were well equipped with a kitchen, very convenient for breakfasts and snacks. The pool is small and closes early. The staff were most helpful and accommodating. Great sunsets!
This was a very different Hawaian experience, quiet and sleepy. You definitely need a car to get around and the ferry to get here from Lahaina is generally very rough. However lots of whales this time of year!

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room.

When you tire of the throngs of tourists, the chain restaurants and the fake luaus it's time to come to Molokai and enjoy what the real Hawaii has to offer. Others have made a big deal of Hotel Molokai being the only hotel on the island. That is true but what they don't say is the staff doesn't act like they are the only hotel on the island. Everyone from the general manager on down were exceptional in their friendliness and service. Hula Shores is the onsite restaurant and the menu selection and prices were both outstanding. My wife has some special dietary needs and they bent over backwards to satisfy her requests. The bar staff was exceptional and visiting with the locals was a daily highlight. There is entertainment every evening ranging from soloists, to duos, to small bands and some evenings included hula dancers. I know we had one of the, if not the best, room on the property. We reserved an oceanfront room and were placed in room 221. This was on the second floor and the lanai looked out over the channel across to Lanai. The room was clean, well maintained and kept tidy with daily maid service. From a logistical standpoint you'll need a rental car on the island. There is no shuttle provided by the hotel and the various attractions are scattered around the island. Some of the most breathtaking require 4 wheel drive. There is a small pool on the property however it does close fairly early in the day (anywhere between 3PM and 6PM) in preparation for the evening entertainment. The water directly off the hotel property is very shallow and usually calm due to the fact that the reef is well off shore. This in no way denies you the ability to whale watch beyond the reef and we did a lot of that not to mention the sunsets. The hotel also has kayaks and arrangements can be made to take them out on the water and explore. We've stayed at some of the best hotels/resorts that the other islands have to offer. We had been on every other island in the chain (except Niihau) prior to coming to Molokai. When we come back it will be to Molokai.

Room Tip: I recommend the oceanfront rooms not only for the view but also for the cooling of tradewinds. The h...
