We stayed at Palm Cottage during spring break for 11 nights. It was absolutely wonderful! As the property is behind a secure gate, it was on beautifully maintained grounds, oceanfront and very private. Many times we watched the whales frolicking in the distance from the lanai. Several beautiful swimmable beaches were a 5-10 minute walk away, including Baby Beach where we saw turtles several times. Paia is a charming town with lots of characters and friendly people. Don't miss Mana Foods, an awesome natural foods market with lots of locally produced food. The cottage itself was more than adequately furbished for cooking our own meals. Our kids loved the twin beds and our double was super comfortable. All in all a wonderful stay, we highly recommend it!
I was pleasantly surprised to find that this residence is actually better than it looks in the online photos. The living area has high, vaulted ceilings and had a comfortable couch, overlooking the ocean. There is a large propane BBQ outside on the large wooden deck. The beds are comfortable, and there were linens provided. The Palm Cottage is to the left of the other homes on this large lot, and is the closest to the sounds of the nearby waves lapping the rocky shore. There is a laundry room on the side of the cottage. The location is a very short walk to the center of Paia, yet set on the ocean shore with manicured lawns and gardens, behind a security gate. Only a few times did we see anyone on the beach area, other than a few brave surfers who landed briefly. So best of both worlds, private but very accessible to all the sweet town of Paia has to offer. Walking distance to most restaurants, grocery store, and other assorted shopts. We liked Jaggers for clothing items, and of course the nearby Paia gelato is a must visit location.
My only issue with anything was the gardener, who showed up early our first morning on the property and mowed the lawn while we were having breakfast on the porch. The lawn mower is the kind that are ridden like small tractors, so its quite noisy. He showed up again 4 days later, this time working with various noisy equipment for several hours, from 9 am to about 2, including another, unnecessary lawn mowing episode. We left the premises for a few hours after the noise began, returning around 1 pm, when the lawn mowing began. I did not deduct from the score for this because the place was otherwise perfect.
The kitchen has the minimum basics, and no built in oven. There is a small toaster oven and a microwave. So foodies who plan on cooking something that requires specific equipment should pack it, or relax and do something simple instead.
