Napili Shores is a traditional, old school conglomeration of vacation condos. The setting is very comfortable, low key and family oriented.
I am tempted to give it a 5 star rating for what it is, but this is not a "5 star" resort setting. There are no gold-plated toilets or hedge fund managers hanging out in the lobby.
This is a very comfortable setting with families that return year after year to enjoy the beauty and relaxation of West Maui.
The reception staff is always friendly and helpful. The rooms are comfortable. There are two pools with one hot tub by the upper pool. The age-old Gazebo Restaurant is onsite and a must at least once during your stay.
There are ceiling fans in the rooms but no air conditioning. Louvered windows can be opened to let in the breeze.
Wifi is included but best to avoid computer time and enjoy the sunsets instead.

I enjoy the koi pond as well and make it a point to slow down and take in the calmness this place has to offer.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are desirable.

I rented one of the privately owned 1 bedroom units; the staff was extremely friendly and helpful
We rented SUP from the onsite rental shop (if you plan to do this, work on your arm strength, the rental shop is furthest point on property from the beach)
Because some are privately owned, the condition of units varies; all common areas were pristine, the community BBQs well looked after and although resort was full, we never needed to wait to use.
Location is great, right on a nice swimmable beach. Kids were a little disappointed, the ocean was very calm this trip.
2 pools and a hot tub - did not use, we preferred the beach

Room Tip: A/B buildings closer to beach D/E closer to pool

We love it here. Little kitchenette with a grocery store two minutes up the road is great for saving money. The pool area is lovely. The sunset last night was gorgeous and we have been told there are turtles just off the shore. It’s a little dated but clean, and the grounds are simple but beautiful. And they told us ocean view and it WAS ocean view. First hotel out of three to actual be what is said in the listing!

This was our second time staying at Napili Shores Maui by Outrigger. We returned because we liked the beach and the less commercialized area. Ka'anapali and Kihei are much too busy for us and take away from the reason that we come to Hawaii. The condos at this complex are quite basic, with a few kitchen utensils and necessary dishes. It is older, but efforts have been made to update the units. We had new carpet, sinks and taps in our room. We stayed in a studio unit with a garden view, which is all that we required. There is no air conditioning, but we didn't need it. There were 3 ceiling fans in the condo and that was enough to keep us comfortable. The property seems to be well maintained and the vegetation is nicely trimmed.
There was quite a bit of noise coming from slamming doors, kids and construction across the street. Most people observe the 10pm until 8am quiet time, but there are always a few that make some noise later into the night. The construction started at 7am every morning, so we made a point of getting to bed on time and getting up at that 7. It is the best part of the day, so it didn't really bother us to get up early. We take our white noise machine with us everywhere we go and that blocks out a lot of the sounds.
We enjoyed using the 2 pools and found that the one close to the ocean was the deepest and empty most of the time. The other one was full of children, so we left it to them.
We met several very nice people at the shared (very good quality) barbecues and liked that the condo complex had a small town atmosphere. We also appreciated that we could order from the very popular Gazebo Restaurant at the front of the property by calling from our room and picking up the food within minutes. The Times Supermarket and Napili Market are close by and there are various farmer's markets in the area, which makes it easy and affordable to cook your own meals.
Keep in mind that this is a tropical country and any food or sweet drinks will attract ants. We take all sizes of zip lock bags with us and put our open food and snacks in them whenever we travel to warm climates. Also, we keep as much as possible in the fridge and clean up any food on the table or counters right away. This will ensure that these little pests don't spend time in your room.
The beach area is suitable for swimming and the lava rocks in front of the complex make for interesting pictures. The humpback whales were performing for us on several days, right out in front of the complex. The sunsets are stunning. Also, the Kapalua Coastal walking trail is close by to enjoy walking along the ocean for a beautiful hike.
Housecleaning is every 4th day, which was just right for us. Our housekeeper, Analiza was very efficient, personable and friendly. It was obvious that English was not her first language, but we appreciated that she made an effort to ask where we were from and if we were enjoying our vacation. Paula and Anela at the front desk were both very customer focused. We had trouble with our fridge and they cheerfully accommodated us with a work-around solution until it could be fixed. The maintenance person who repaired the fridge left us a note to let us know that it was fixed and what the problem had been. The manager kindly gave us a gift certificated for the trouble. All of this was appreciated.
This is not a five star hotel, but it is a very decent, reasonably priced accommodation which gets you away from the hustle, bustle of the crowded resorts. It all depends on what you want and how much you want to spend on your vacation.
This is nothing to do with the property, but thought that I would mention it for people who are coming to west Maui to stay. If you are travelling from Kahului or Kihei areas to the Napili region from about 3pm-7pm, you will find that there is very heavy traffic up until you get past Lahaina. Allow for the extra time or travel before or after this time to save yourself the frustration.

Room Tip: 2nd floor ensures that you don't hear footsteps above

We arrived in at Napili Shores Resort to what we thought was Maui paradise until we were woken on our first morning to the sound of bulldozers, trucks, jack hammers, drills, sledgehammers from construction noise. This continued EVERY SINGLE DAY. The most unacceptable part of this was No courtesy email from the resort to forewarn us before our arrival so we could make other accommodation arrangements. Insensitive responses from reception staff were basically "You're welcome to leave and go somewhere else" without even considering how fully occupied all alternative accommodation places in Maui would be. I mean seriously who wants to spend their time on a Maui vacation driving around from hotel/resort to hotel/resort praying for vacancies once you're already on the island !! And we even then had to fight with reception staff to ensure that we weren't going to be charged for cancelling early and relocating to other accommodation. NOT what we came to Maui for !!
On top of this we heard our noisy neighbour and their children through our wall the entire time we were there. All staff were willing to do was make useless courtesy calls to our neighbour which made absolutely no difference to the noise at all.
After 5 calls to try to speak to Norm the manager and leaving my mobile cell number with him, I finally got hold of him and thankfully he allowed us to leave early without penalty.
In addition to everything above, Napili is very susceptible to rain and very high winds which rattled our doors and windows and turned our bedroom into a drafty fridge. Driving into Lahaina brought us instant relief with better weather.
We also had staff on FOUR occasions knock and enter our room despite having the Privacy / DO not disturb sign clearly hanging from our room door. Not acceptable!
The only positives we found was the scenery which is wonderful and the Gazebo restaurant served great food with a view to die for and reasonable prices. The rooms are a good size and well equipped, including kitchenette.
Despite other reviews I would never return to Napili Shores......we wore ear plugs the entire time and still suffered from unacceptable noise (including from our neighbour next door) .

Room Tip: A lot of rooms face the noise from the parking lot that surrounds the property.
