“Spectacular Showcase of Maui”

Ulalena makes for a great theatrical experience - nice combination of sound and light, local music, acrobatics, and dance showcasing Maui's history and Hawaiian culture! Highly recommended. It's as good and in some cases better than a Cirque du Soleil show. We had a dinner package with the Lahaina Fish Co. - I would avoid this restaurant and pick from the other choices - Ruth, HardRock Cafe, and if you want to splurge Lahaina Grill.

We're glad you enjoyed the show! It's an honor to have you compare us to big-budget productions like Cirque du Soleil. While compared to Cirque we are culturally bound in terms of storyline creativity, our goal is to share and perpetuate the beautiful Hawaiian culture. Please find us on Facebook and Twitter, so you can stay connected with any updates about the show and get to know our cast and crew! Mahalo for the support!

Thank you for taking the time to see our show. Our goal as a show is to share the culture, and because of this creatively, we are culturally bound. The music is all original and based off of the true Hawaiian culture. You can find and sample the music on iTunes, if you search under 'Ulalena. Unlike many luaus/shows on the island, 'Ulalena is historically accurate to the Hawaiian culture, and less expensive compared to competitive luau-style shows.

“Great job everyone!”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

We were so amazed by this show and staff, especially with some technical difficulties they experienced at first. To keep the audience entertained, we got to learn about how to play the nose flute, as the problem was quickly fixed. My daughter enjoyed this extra, unexpected learning experience. The show was amazing. We enjoyed learning about the history of Hawaii, through dance and music. The live music was amazing! The dance had such a great variety, including some funny moments for the kids. This is a well done and professional production. It was a nice break from the traditional luau, since my family has done that on different occasions. I would highly recommend this to anyone! It is amazing, and you won't be disappointed. Beware, however, the final ending song may stick in your head for days. My little seven year old girl is still singing it! :)

They do this thing where they make waves out of silky blue material during the show. I'll never forget it. And the music... amazing!

“It's just OK”
Reviewed 10 July 2012

With no expectations, as the tickets were a gift, we were impressed with the facility for a small island production. The stage, music and acrobatics were great. The brochure said to bring a wrap, so we were prepared for high air conditioning. We were ROASTING in there with just a shirt and pants.

The story was a bit choppy and some scenes were boring. All of the dialog is in Hawaiian except for the narrator who reads what is in the brochure. It was impressive for a local production. I would describe it as a bit Lion King with the big puppets and a bit Cirque with the one acrobat. The show lasted 1.5 hours.

Wouldn't go see it again, but would not tell you to miss it either. It does have entertainment value and is a nice change of pace. They have a bar and sell popcorn/snacks. We had a picnic by the sea wall before we went in, and that was perfect.

Also the seating is just about the same - first row is not necessarily the best. Also if you wait in your seat after the show, the cast will come out and talk with you in the theater.

Thank you for taking the time to see our show, and we're glad you enjoyed it! Our goal is to perpetuate the culture, and although it can make the storyline a little tricky to follow because of the language barrier, we're glad you appreciated the cultural value and talent our amazing performers.

As you said, for a small island production, we do the best we can with the facilities we have. The theatre is the premiere theatre venue on Maui, but we do still sometimes fall victim to the summer heat. While this is a rare occurence, it sounds like Pele was really excited for the show that night!
