We've traveled here about 5 times, alone and with family. It's big, beautiful, has great staff, lots of fun activities for adults and children, a nice little "General Store" (not cheap, but it IS Hawaii where nothing is cheap). And the snorkeling right off the beach outside the resort is terrific. We're going back this summer!

Having visited Maui about ten times previously (I lost exact count), I was looking for something new for this return trip. My criteria was strict:

1. Stay an arm's length from Lahaina to enjoy this beautiful and fun whaling town (along with all it's great restaurants and shopping).

2. Take a break from the Ka'anapali Beach resort hotels where the beach has almost completely eroded and the hotels are getting a bit older (I've stayed at the Hyatt and Westin several times).

3. Stay at a top-tier property that will cater to my young family (three kids under 7).
Putting it simply, the Westin Villas nailed it. There is a lot to like about this property.

This is a relatively new resort built with an elegant Hawaiian plantation-style design and four-story guest room buildings that make it feel both nicer and relatively more intimate (for a big chain property) than its predecessors in the surrounding areas. The property sits in front of an expanse of quiet beach, and just a couple miles down the road from Lahaina and Whaler’s Village (shopping and restaurants). Far enough away to make it feel secluded, quiet and peaceful, and close enough to fill your evenings with some fun nights out.

Sharing a room with a spouse and three small children, I wanted something with space to spread out, and critical extras like a refrigerator and washer/dryer combo. The Villas’ condo-style accommodations give you all that. But, I also have a strict policy of not making my own bed, meals or cleaning up anything when visiting Hawaii. So, the full-service housekeeping, room service, and valet parking gave me all the elements of a hotel I wanted as well. These hybrid-style properties obviously aren’t unique in general, but most struggle to effectively pull off this condo/hotel mix effectively. My experience has shown that most properties of this type are really just condos with a couple of token (or nickel-and-dime) extras. The Westin seems to straddle both of these worlds with ease.

In addition to the aforementioned benefits for families, I can’t neglect to mention the great kid’s swimming pool and play area with a pirate ship and slide.

As for service, nothing stood out as being extraordinarily bad or good – with the exception of the valet staff. This team deserves special recognition for their level of service and attention. Universally, the valet staff addressed even simple things like retrieving my car with a strong sense of urgency. They remembered my family and I after about a day or so, and seemed to take a geniune interest in how our trip was going and what they could do to help. It made such a difference in the overall experience.

Ironically, having been to Maui several times over the years, my wife and I have decided we are ready to try something new for our next beach vacation. That said, Maui, and in particular the Lahaina area, will always be a special place for us. And, when we return, I’ll almost undoubtedly come back to the Westin Villas.

Room Tip: Rooms with "mountain views" are closer to the highway and more prone to road noise. Arrang...

This resort was the perfect "home base" for our family vacation in February. And I use the word "home" literally, because that's what it seemed like, with all the amenities inside our villa. We cooked over half our meals in the fully loaded kitchen (or on the grills just outside the building). This was a huge benefit of staying at the Westin Villas, not only because we love to cook, but also because we saved plenty of money!

We also loved the number of pools, including the "kiddie pool" with the pirate ship. The beach at Kaanapali is just steps away, too, and the "beach boardwalk" the connects all the properties along Kaanapali is very convenient for walks and runs.

Another convenience of this property is the "Starwood Bus" that connects all three Starwood properties in Kaanapali, as well as the Lahaina bus that runs a separate route down to the center of Lahaina village. No rental car needed!

All in all, we had a fantastic experience at the Westin Villas, and we would definitely return for any future visits to Maui.

This was our first trip to Maui and the Westin VIllas lived up to their excellent reviews! We checked in about 1/2 hour earlier then the 4 pm check in with no problem. We had the 2 bedroom lock off which was spacious, modern and very clean. The one thing we do wish they had was a true 2 bedroom villa rather then the lock off which had two 1 bedroom villas connected by an entry foyer. We had our boys 12 and 15 stay on the one side and my husband and I on the other. This worked okay with us as we just propped open the doors, otherwise every time the boys wanted to come over to us they would have had to use a door key. we are owners in Florida and their 2 bedroom is like one very large condo.

This resort is just beautiful. We enjoyed the pool with the waterslide and had no problem finding lounge chairs. My husband and older son enjoyed the snorkelling in the ocean right off the resort's beach and even swam with a turtle.

We had stayed our first few nights at the Sheraton just up the beach and found the villas to be more private with a lot less people traffic from the other various hotels. Yes, it is further down from Whalers Village with its shops and restaurants but the added privacy is worth it and everything is just a free shuttle ride away.

I would highly recommend staying at the villas and we will most definitely be returning!

Room Tip: Make sure you let them know you do not want a room whose balconies over look the main parking lot...
