“Great resort, great location!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2012

Me and my friends spent allot of time planing our Hawaii-trip and we a specially spent allot of time looking up hotel and resort options for our three week trip. For our week in Maui we wanted a resort with a great location, close beach and pool access and a room of good standard and that offered a kitchen. Honua Kai offered all of this and more. The units are being kept in great shape and the standard is very high. It's very clear that the organization surrounding Honua Kai is running a tight ship and focus has been put on the right areas. The service is great and the staff is genuinely nice. I've been working in the travel industry for over 10 years and you become a bit jaded when you travel allot, both for business and pleasure. But this resort impressed me and I will definitely recommend it both professionally and privately. I only have one thing to complain about and that is the $25 a day resort fee that they charge. I have no problem with a resort fee but it's a bit rich when you on top of the $25 a day have to pay for beach chairs and umbrellas if you want them on the beach. That should be included in the resort fee.
With all that said, I highly recommend the Honua Kai resort and I will try to make my way back sooner then later :)

Called from NY to ask for ground floor, central location. They delivered! Our "partial oceanfront" turned out to be HH 0145 steps to pool, beach, gourmet shop, valet. No schlepping- just perfect the condos are just as depicted- new, clean, in great condition with full wall of opening lanai glass doors! Valets and all staff are helpful and sincere... Aloha spirit!
Rental car is a must on Maui no matter where you stay, so this location is perfect: snorkeling, boogie boarding and swimming right in front. Best part, we never had a crowd even on Feb break!

Research a lot before booking any boat trips as the winds are torturous!
Todd at Maui Wave Riders is awesome and helped us surf, though we were pitiful without him!
Polynesian Village Luau is the best night out!
Maui Zipline in Wailuku was awesome with Alex, Robert and Vinny:)
Me, husband and kids aged 11, 10 & 5 had a magical time in Maui!!

We chose Honua Kai for our vacation after seeing the property while walking the beachwalk last year. The grounds are lovely and having Dukes House restaurant on the property is so convenient. Our 1 bedroom suite was modern and clean. The staff was courteous and helpful. I was somewhat apprehensive after reading reviews about the wind and sewer smell and can honestly say that we experienced some of each, but it was not enough that I would discourage staying there. If there is one complaint we had it was the road noise (we had a "mountain view" room). We enjoyed the convenice of the nearby Times Market, the Fish Market and the farmers market. This resort seems to be popular with families with young children and there is no designated adult only pool.

My husband and I stayed at Honua Kai for six nights in November 2011 for our honeymoon and it was absolutely amazing! We booked everything through Costco travel. We had a studio on the 6th floor with an ocean view. We slept with the nana wall open and could hear the ocean. It was perfect! Having the full kitchen definitely came in handy. I would recommend getting a safeway membership card if you're going to grocery shop, saved a ton of money!. The pool and beach were perfect! My husband snorkled for hours right on our beach. Loved Duke's, food is amazing! Duke's aloha hour is a must! We can't wait to go back!

We stayed at Honua Kai for 9 nights with our two adult sons. We were in room 818 in the Konea Tower. The room was very nice. Modern, clean and spacious with two bathrooms, a full kitchen and washing machine and dryer. The large lanai was particularly nice. Although it was too hot in the mornings it was extremely pleasant in the afternoons and early evenings. We ate dinner on the balcony most nights.

Whales:
818 has partial ocean views but the sea is too far away for whale watching even with binoculars. We were there in peak whale season and saw lots of whales, in the distance, when we were down at the beach. We also did a whale watching tour which was just fantastic. The person at the tour desk recommended that we go on a smaller boat rather than with one of the larger operators which turned out to be extremely good advice. When whales approached the boat everyone (there were six people on the tour altogether) was able to get a great view rather than just those people who were lucky enough to be seated on the side the whales came up to. The name of the company we went with was UFO Parasailing and I would highly recommend them.

Car and parking:
It is definitely worth having a car if you are at Honua Kai. There is an excellent supermarket across from the resort and the on-sight restaurant Duke's is very good but it is a bit of a distance to pretty much anything else. There is a free shuttle that takes you to Whaler's Village where there are shops and restaurants and several other resorts in the area. We booked through Kaanapali Beach Properties and they made a big thing of the fact that we had to pay separately for parking - $10 a day. Their e-mail instructions were very clear that when we arrived the first thing we had to do on arrival was arrange resort parking for the full lenght of our stay at the front desk. Because we arrived very late at night we followed these instructions without being able to assess the parking situation for ourselves but the next morning it was pretty clear that what we had paid for was underground parking and we could have parked the whole time for free in the open air car parks.

Snorkelling:
The beach immediately in front of the resort was okay for seeing fish but there is very little live coral. However about 5 minutes walk or swim away the beach in front the next resort down going in the direction of Whalers' Village is much more interesting and further along still, at Black Rock the snorkelling is just great, although it did get quite crowded. My son and I snorkelled right around the point and saw loads of fish, several turtles and a white tipped reef shark. You need to be a confident swimmer to go around the point but with fins on the current wasn't really an issue. Black Rock is probably about half an hour's stroll from Honua Kai but I'm reasonably sure the free shuttle bus goes there. There is limited beach parking at the Sheraton, about six places, so if you arrive very early you might get lucky and be able to park.

All in all we had a fantastic time at Honua Kai and i would highly recommend it.
