It was great hotel. The beach was excellent. Hawaii is very windy so it's hard to get shade from the sun as there are no sun umbrellas, but going to sleep at night listening to waves lapping on the rocks below you is priceless. A wonderful location. We had an Ocean front room and I highly recommend it. It was a pity that they closed the beach path early many evenings and you had to walk all the way around the periphery of the hotel to get to your room. We really missed room service.

Room Tip: ocean front room is fab

My grandparents stayed at Napili Kai in the 80s, and loved it then. We were just there and really loved it now, almost 30 years later! We have a 7 month old baby, and the room/ resort was perfect for our family. We stayed in the Puna 2 building which was recently renovated with really comfortable and nice furniture. The ocean front studio was the perfect size for us. Missed a bathtub but the shower was nice. Had the pool outside our room almost to ourselves. Enjoyed the Sea House restaurant, and loved the beautiful grounds and lawn. Staff are really baby friendly and helpful. Would stay here anytime, the only problem was the price. Very spendy, the good rooms are quite expensive. But so nice to be on the beach, not in a huge high rise generic chain hotel. Such a beautiful and unique hotel.

We found Napili Kai, by mistake, in 1985. With the exception of 4 years that were beyond our control, we have returned to Napili Kai time and time again. You cannot find an ocean front room anywhere in Hawaii for $500.00 a night, no matter how hard you try, nor will this room be 50 linear feet away from the bay.
You might say that some of the rooms are decorated in a very dated style, what with all the wicker, on the other hand, some would find this very kitschy. Over the past few years, they have completely modernized both of the Puna buildings. No matter what room you are in, you can't beat the service. I won't describe how this hotel and the staff have gone the extra mile for us, this review would go on forever. My understanding is that the entire property will be re-modeled, pending condo owners approval for those buildings that are condo.
The restaurant is the only drawback to this property. The restaurant has an excellent view, the food is very good to excellent. The problem is, an hour after you place your order, it will be delivered to another table. The wait staff seem confused, most of the time. They have a $5 appetizer offering late in the afternoon at the bar, with excellent offerings. The menu has changed since our last stay, so I can't tell you what is good, or bad.
We've been to the slack key concert twice. It's on the property, ends early enough so guests aren't bothered by noise. How could this soothing music be judged annoying?
Check with friends about outside activities, the concierges at all the hotels on Maui are contract employees of tour operators, they are basically told where to steer you for fun. The concierge at Napili is no different, but I would use the concierge to book everything.

My wife and I love Napili Kai. Our first trip was just the two of us, but then we returned a few years later with our children. Rooms are practically on the beach. There is also a regular pool an adult only pool and hot tub, and large putting green. You are very close to (about a 7 iron shot) the Kapalua golf course. It's a very quiet area on Maui, but you're only about a 5 min drive to all the action in Lahaina. The beach is technically public, but really only used by the resorts on the cove, which makes it feel very private. We can't wait to visit again for a 3rd time in the future

I want to open with an assurance to whomever reads this, that there is no need to worry about whether you selected, or are about to select, the Napili Kai as your destination on Maui. This place is fantastic. I won't restate what the other reviewers noted as far as the perks, the beauty, and ammenities, I only want to put you at ease as to whether you made the right choice. You did, or are about to. The uncertainty of value seems to be of concern for some of the reviewers. Price should not be the determining factor on whether you stay at this resort. I am not a wealthy man, but wealth is relative. Who can put a price on the perfect sunset viewed from any spot on the property? Or the sound of waves lapping on a stunning beach. You are making an investment, not paying a price. The money will long be forgotten, but the memories you create will stay with you for a lifetime. Do it right, don't second guess, and don't look back. Step up to the plate, lay the money down, and enjoy your life.

That being said, now for a few particulars : We stayed in room #4 of the Lahina building. This room opens to a carpet of perfectly manicured grass that stretches for 30 or so feet, then you hit the sand of the palm treed beach. Need I say more? The Sea House food was excellent. If you have to wait for your table, sit at the bar for a while and splurge on the tropical drinks. I had fun with it. Start at the top of the list and work your way down ( not all in one sitting of course ). You'll be there for a few days, so just let them know that you'd like number 4 or whatever on the list, and have number 5 ready. At night time, if you can, sit at the bar stools toward the right end of the bar facing the beach. As the water retreats from the shore, check out the reflection of the different colored flood lights from the various other resorts. It looks like a srting of Christmas lights displayed just for you. An unintended bonus, and one of the magical memories of your stay.

Room Tip: Bottom floor of the Lahina building. Ask for room 4.
