“Great Location Great Staff”
Reviewed 26 April 2012

We had an excellent experience here. One of the nicest beaches in Maui is only steps away. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room we stayed in was clean but dated. The food was ok. The pool is good(not heated) and is in a great spot. The grounds were very well kept. I would consider staying here again.

Room Tip: The ground level rooms that were pool view were very convenient to get to and from the pool and ocea...

We recently stayed here after reading so many positive reviews on TA. At first we thought we were in an episode of The Golden Girls (many elderly Americans come here year after year) but after settling in we really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are comfortable, the grounds are nice and the location is fantastic. Whalers Village is just a short stroll along the boardwalk and there are a few restaurants to try there. The food at the hotel is ordinary and not recommended. Snorkelling at Black Rock just near the hotel was amazing. To see green sea turtles grazing on sea grass was unreal. But for us, seeing whales frolicking just off shore was the highlight of our stay in beautiful Maui.

We went back again since we liked the area of the hotel and how nice everyone was the first time. Still didn't have time to do the activities offered on site...next time though...we'll go back.
Did the welcome breakfast this time and it was very informative. KBH has the best spot on the beach, love that snorkeling can be done right there too. Service was great again, everyone there is so nice. Looking forward to going back....next time taking friends along.

We selected this hotel on the recommendations of close friends that have stayed here several times. After spending 10 nights, I have no hesitation suggesting this Hotel for others looking for the following:

- A hotel with great Hawaiian hospitality
- very friendly staff including everyone from the front counter, guest services, activity coordinators, chamber maids and even the gardeners.
- A nice wide beach with loads of sand and a short 3 minute walk down to Black Rock for some wonderful snorkeling
- Free Hula shows every evening in the outdoor courtyard. For those worried about noise, these shut down at 9pm.
- Short walk to additional restaurants and shopping.
- An on-site convenience store with all the essentials.
- A very well informed concierge service
- Plenty of free activities from Lei making, Hula lessons, pineapple cutting (and eating) to keep you and little ones engaged if you are so inclined.
- A place to kick back and relax.
- A nearly "smoke free" environment. Smoking is restricted to a couple outdoor segregated locations and on a limited number of lanais only. Smoking is not allowed in any of the rooms I believe.
- A hotel that is child friendly

Avoid this hotel if you are looking for the following:

- 5 star white glove treatment
- You feel it necessary to smoke in your room.
- Looking for a wild party location. This hotel is very family oriented and is suitable for couples of all ages and families looking for relaxation.
- Insist on having Wi-Fi in your room. Wi-Fi is available for a charge in the pool area and wired Internet is available in the rooms, also for a charge. 2 Computers are available in the lobby area but at nearly $0.50 a minute, it can be expensive.
- Looking for an a big resort atmosphere.

The restaurant (the Tiki Terrace) has exceptional food and is renown for it's Sunday Champagne brunch. The Tiki grill by the pool and outdoor Tiki bar serves up very good quality light snacks.

We both enjoyed strolling around the very clean grounds. The tropical vegetation and plentiful flora provided a relaxing and aromatic setting for our vacation. Whether it was sitting around the pool, sitting under the shade of palm tree, or soaking up the sun on the beach, all were great.

It is clear this property prides itself on it's reputation of being the most "Hawaiian Hotel". The staff proudly display their Hawaiian heritage and looks forward to sharing this with their guests. From the free orientation breakfast to the lei presentation ceremony on the day of your departure, you really do get the feeling they want you to think of yourself as one of the family.

First of all as a Brit, I will admit that my expectations of service are probably lower than my US Cousins and therefore you won't find me making any comments about this, because I was quite happy.

So with hindsight was it a good move to change from a Garden room in the Sheraton to a full Ocean view room in the KBH at about the same price? Short answer is yes. The main reason is that I travelled half way around the world to spend time on an idyllic the beach, travel around the island and look at whales and memorable sunsets with my family. These are the memories that I will take away with me - not the brand of the hotel that I stayed in or the quality of the marble in the bathroom or the quality of the toiletries or that they had a branch of Starbucks etc. As for the hotel pool - we didn't use it once (and that is with a 10 year old in tow) and for the life of me I can't think why you would when the warm Pacific is 50 yards from your hotel room.

Negatives? Well the dinner experience was forgettable but there are great restaurants next door in Whalers village so this was not an issue. We missed WiFi until we figured that we could walk down to the Marriott Starbucks and use theirs over a drink.

I do travel a lot for work and admit that I get caught up in the whole top tier status thing with big corporate brands. However this time I got out of that status trap and went for location/value and KBH came out top. The memories will last a lifetime.

Room Tip: Ocean Front Kaui'i wing.
