Great view, very nice unit rented from agency not the resort itself. Very peaceful relaxing vacation. Downside- no snack shop, bar, or restaurant and no evidence they were working on rebuilding the restaurant that was destroyed a year ago by fire. No waterfalls in the pool like they had in the past. Had to take a golf cart to your unit for your luggage, groceries, etc. and there is a steep walk up to your units from the beach but they do have complementary golf car service up to your unit and a phone at the beach to call if you would like to be picked up. We encountered 3 different drivers. Two were very nice. One younger dark haired dark skin driver acted like he hated his job, never smiled and acted inconvenienced any time he had to pick us up - definitely not concerned about customer service. Saw a few large roaches in our unit but have been told they are very common and hard to get rid of in Hawaii but were not sure. Did not see any in the condo we stayed in in Maui.

Still overall the most relaxing place we stayed on all four of the islands, best view of any island and would come back and stay again.

So disappointed, we had fabulous view from Rooms 5101 & 5102 but that is all I can say. The kitchen was very OLD and had the washer/dryer unit resting on some sort of pallet. The frig was yucky and the stove-oh my! The bedrooms & baths needed a good scrubbing and fresh paint. It was something out of the 70's or 80's and hadn't been touched since then. At sometime there must have been a leak in the unit or it was flooded as the bottoms of the doors were split & peeling like they had absorbed water and split.

As BAD as the unit was, the grounds were beautiful. The tennis courts looked amazing - BUT the pool had no bar, there is NO restaurant or bar on site so plan on going next door to the St. Regis or bringing in all your groceries. The beach is a long walk, but they have golf carts running around the resort to take you where you wish to go, that was nice and so were the drivers.

BOTTOM line if you are exchange a GREAT timeshare (we have a Marriott) for this, you are losing. This is NOT Marriott quality...we had made this exchange a year before we visited...so you'd think if they had NICE units which had already been refurbished we would have gotten one. We did not...good luck folks on this one you will need it.

VERY DISAPPOINTED, but did love Kauai

We had a nice stay in room 7308. Just in looking at a couple of not-so-good reviews, you can get this info from researching online before booking a room. We picked this room based on best price with a view we wanted, and it was exactly as shown. We read the reviews on the room as well and, again, they were pretty spot on.

We saw nothing but great service from the staff. We witnessed some more "high maintenance" guests that were treated with nothing but great class. We knew in advance about the restaurant being closed so that was a non-issue as well.

This place is fantastic for the price. You are sharing a beach with people paying lots at the St. Regis compared to our $100-ish per night with ocean and mountain view. These surrounding beaches and areas are used in many movies - that is how fantastic they are.

The room could use some updating, but again - nothing surprised us because we researched it ahead of time. We usually don't go to places with many children, but knew with these prices there would be a bunch. That made it a little noisier than I prefer, But we didn't want to spend the $$ on this trip to get that type of place so it was expected and only when they were at the pool for the most part.

To be a broken record - absolutely an amazing deal for the money. Research before booking and pick a place in your budget, with the amenities and views you want. Tons to choose from and we looked at many.

It is also located on a great beach and also near a shopping center, 5-min to a great boat ride with Na Pali Catamaran (Capt. Sam!), 5-min to great horseback riding at Princeville Adventures and more.

Room Tip: Research! Look up the rooms on VRBO or just google them, read the reviews, ask questions on Trip Advisor!

We were on our Honeymoon and were so disapointed with our room. They actually gave us keys for 2 rooms. 1203 and 1204 One room was a bedroom and bathroom, the other had a kitchen and living room and had an adjoining door which I found really odd. We made reservations 1 year in advanced and we got a room as far back from the water as you could get, It was really run down and smelled like mold. The bed was hard as concrete and we hardly got any sleep, after one night we decided to change hotels. They told us there was no other room available. They refused to return our money so we were out $800. They had the nerve to charge $200 a night for a room the quality of a motel 6. For the cost of a new hotel and this one we could have stayed at a 5 star hotel. But I have to give kudos to the grounds they were beautiful and the pools were awesome, but the rooms were in dire need of renovations and they should not rent out moldy rooms, they actually brought in a dehumidifier which did nothing but make a lot of noise. I would not take a chance on this place we wasted a whole day moving and it ruined our honeymoon.

Room Tip: Good luck with that, Unless you know someone who has an updated place don't take your chances. They did say it will be gutted in 2014 and rebuilt.

Stayed at Hanalei Bay Resort Feb. 23 to March 3, 2012. Resort grounds were beautiful and staff was friendly and responsive. 2-Bedroom unit was somewhat dated but clean and functional. Actually, we like the rather traditional low-key 'aloha' decor. Had a tour of model units for interior remodeling that is starting this year- very nice. Restaurant is still closed due to last year's fire but the rather arduous Hawaii permit process for rebuilding is almost done and construction should be finished in 2013. If one wants a quiet and comfortable base for exploring Kauai's North Shore, with incomparable views of Hanalei Bay, this resort is it!

Room Tip: Ask for an 'ocean view'.
