“Da Best Saimin in the World”
Reviewed 3 March 2012

I've eaten saimin since 1961, when we moved to Oahu. I've loved it for all these years, and now I've found the best. This small local place is a jewel. We ordered large regular saimin, with two chicken teriyaki sticks. They where delicious, with the broth being so tasty. You must bring cash, and be ready to sit counter style.

“My all-time FAV”
Reviewed 2 March 2012

Been going there for years; once upon a time I was the only non-local in the joint. But then you were requested to not put your gum under the counter. Remember that? I do. Saimin is best I have ever had. No matter what rent-a-car i had, it always turned into this slightly out of the way place. Stay away you tourists - leave a seat for me!!!! LOL!

“Where the locals go for comfort food”
Reviewed 26 February 2012

Saimin is broth + noodles + extras like shrimp tempura or wonton or egg or vegetables or all of the above. I guess you could call it Hawaiian comfort food. Hamura has been dishing out saimin to the locals for decades. Close to the LHE Airport, make it your first stop after you deplane. Try the chicken and/or beef skewers too. Swathed in teriyaki sauce, they're a great appetizer.

It's a popular place with families and small groups, couples and singles. I'wouldn't have any hestiation going there alone any time, night or day. The service is fine, if perfunctory. You'll be sitting at either at the wrap-around counter or at a table. Be prepared to wait a spell if you're going at meal time.

Be sure to try the Lilikoi chiffon pie: light, airy, fluffy sweet smoothness. Unless you grew up in Hawaii, your mama probably didn't make it for you.

“Overrated”
Reviewed 24 February 2012

We used to like this place but as a whole have stopped going when we visit. It's definitely overrated. Always crowded, uncomfortably warm, sit on old stools. Saimin ok. Teri chicken rubbery. Have seen the chicken sitting out in the kitchen unrefrigerated. Good Lilikoi pie though.

“good saimin- very reasonable”
Reviewed 16 February 2012

The saimin here is good- try the "special" which comes with wontons, pork and other add-ins. An XL size to go is a cheap meal for two (like $8). Off of Rice Street, near the Kauai Marriott (5 min drive).
