Our room was very nice and we loved the gas fireplace. It was a bit small, once we had our luggage in. We used the hot tub in the common area and didn't run into any other guests, making it feel like it was our own. Breakfast was generous and good! We also appreciated the drinking water dispenser in the room.

Thank You and Aloha!!! I appreciate your feedback. We have tried to solve the space for luggage....but short of doing a complete change of walls can't figure out how to do that. When we started out, travelers came with smaller suitcases. Today we see the huge suitcases...even our kids bring them. Got any ideas? Would love to hear them. Mahalo Lorna

+We only had 24 hours on the big island so it was a bit of a hectic ride; the lava flow into the sea (the lava boat tour is awesome, although a rough ride) changed our plans so when we arrived at the Hilo airport we called the hotel (via the very helpful airport island information people) and let them know we would be arriving very late (after 11pm). They were very accomodating and made arrangements to get to our room even-though the reception was closed.

+We then promptly left and drove up to the crater to see the glow - as we were leaving the next day it would be the only chance to see the glow. We got back around 130am, phew! It was actually cold up at the crater at night, but we got some nice photos.

+Only 6-10 minutes to the crater - very easy access.

-The only minor issues are the carpark was not lit late at night and it was very hard to manoeuvre without hitting a rock, tree or car. Apparently the lights are on timer.

-And the bedspread (I think bedspreads are and outdated concept, especially if it's not going to be washed between guests then it shouldn't be on the bed I believe) was a little tainted - we travel with a UV torch to check rooms before bedding down; but everything else was nice and clean.

+Another bonus was the power boards they used had 4 usb sockets, which saved is getting out our plug converter and adapters. I wish all hotels did this; well done guys!

+Lovely, tasty breakfast and friendly staff; unfortunately we had run dry of "tip-money" so couldn't leave anything :(. We wish we could have stayed longer but that was just the way our trip worked out. Mahalo

Friendly, comfort, and reasonable best describes this lodge. When we booked i was delighted to find out that a free breakfast was included in with our stay, what a deal. The lodge is located close enough to Volcano, after dinner we were able to head out to the observation deck to view the crater as the evening set in.
The grounds are pretty and well kept, the fire place in the restaurant as well as our room made for great ambiance.
The restaurant is amazing! A wide variety of gourmet options, duck for my husband and a New York for me, fabulous! The prices are reasonable and entrees come with soup or salad, if you're just passing through be sure to stop and eat, well worth it.

Don't let the flower lined driveway and artsy silk mobiles fool you. This is a place for a hearty meal that is more fill-the-tummy than fill-the-taste-buds. Here you will be served antelope, a bold mushroom soup, duck breast medallions in a zingy apricot sauce, escargot that reminds one of Thanksgiving meals and a baked coconut encrusted baked brie with all the right fixins. A quicker, more present bar scene would help this establishment as well as quicker more clever cocktails that can stand alongside the bold menu. Can't wait for my next excuse to come up here again.

Mahalo! Yes I agree! A bar scene would be lovely. We keep visualizing it....and some additional fun cocktails would be smashing. Thanks for mentioning. aloha Lorna
