“Lovely stay”

We stayed at the Apapane Guesthouse cottage for 4 nights in late January (2014). We had a great experience both at the cabin and the Volvano area in general.

The cabin was extremely clean and cozy. Sitting in the back porch feels like sitting in a rain forest, far away from everything. It was very convenient to have a kitchen and refrigerator. We had stayed several days in Kona and had bought supplies at Costco. We were going to return to Kona the last night on the Big Island to catch a plane to Maui, but liked the cottage so much we decided to stay an extra day, and just drive back in the morning. We were lucky there was one more night open before the next guest arrival.

Being near the Volcano National Park allowed us to explore the area at our leisure. We went hiking several times and were able to find trails we had not visited before. The Halema'uma'u crater currently has a lava lake that puts on an interesting show at night. You can park near the Jagger Museum even late at night and see the glow of the lava in the smoke plume emanating for the crater. The view of the stars is also amazing. Our visit to the park was greatly enhanced by spending time in the area rather than driving over from Kona or Hilo. The cabin is within 10 minutes of the park entrance. Other interesting sites besides the natural areas are the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens and the Volcano Winery.

“Great little hideaway”
Reviewed 13 February 2014 for a stay in February 2014

Although small, the Hikers' Retreat was the perfect base for us to explore Volcano and its national park. It had all the facilities we needed packed into a couple of small rooms and was very clean and neat.

“Absolutely as Advertised, Charming, Comfy, Rain Forest-y, and Clean”

Imagine taking a shower while looking through a 4' x 3' mirror into dense ferns, leafy trees, and red anturiums! The Apapane Cottage was perfect for a three-night stay while we visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (about a mile away). The studio featured a very comfy foam bed with an extra quilt (it got nicely chilly at night), a sofa and chair with coffee table, a table-for-two for breakfast, and an almost-fully equipped kitchen (a stove top --not oven -- fridge, and garbage disposal!). At the outset we were provided with a bag of coffee beans (a grinder also is included) a bag of fancy granola, a quart of milk, some yogurt and some of Hawaii's deliciuous fat bananas. We saw the proprietor only upon arrival, and he greeted us warmly. The surrounding area is quite dense and we took a little hike. We paid $149 a night and it was worth every penny.

“Brilliant”
Reviewed 9 February 2013 for a stay in February 2012

The cabin was beautiful and in a semi-secluded rainforest location. The hosts were really friendly and helpful. They recommended the Volcano Village early morning produce markets and Cindy took us on a fantastic bird hike. The best place I stayed in Hawaii.
