Could not believe the attention to detail. My wife and I stayed for over a week and found it to be centrally located to all that the east end of the island had to offer. Everything that we needed to make ourselves feel at home was there. A fully equipped kitchen and BBQ made eating at "home" very cost effective. They have the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Of course relaxing in our own private hot tub was also a treat, seeing how we planned our vacation on a tight budget. All and all, we should have stayed an extra week as there was more that we wanted to see and do.

We stayed at Keaau Place for a week at the end of February, 2011. We read all the reviews and were very excited to stay here, going to the National Parks all day, than relaxing in the hot tub or having a BBQ in the evening. First "problem" was that we got to know from the avaliability calendar that something changed with our reservation. We reserved the studio and got the 2 bedroom appartment. The shock came when we moved in. There was some kind of cleaning in the house, but you could feel that everything was stinky. I found unused and clean bedlinen in the closet and changed the linen; we of course used slippers inside the house and after a week they looked like we used them outside. The refrigiator was not cleaned, the tub was dirty, so everything was stinky. I was searching for a mop to clean the floor but did not find one....It ruined a bit our week. This place is quiet and well equipped, a big and continuous cleaning would make this place perfect.

I used to live in Hilo and have stayed just about everywhere on the big island (Kona, Waikoloa, etc). I decided to bring my fiancee out for a visit (her first time in Hawaii) to see what she thought about possibly moving here and we couldn't have been luckier to spend a week at Tanna's studio.

If you're not familiar with Hilo/Puna, you will DEFINITELY need a good map/directions to find your way here - and I'd advise arriving before dark if possible since there aren't street lights in most places on Hawaii, this being no different. With that said, the lack of streetlights is a major PLUS, and being way off the tourist track is AWESOME. No noise, no drama, no problems. We found the studio to be very private feeling and inviting for a good night's sleep - tons of coqui frogs in the area making all kinds of sounds with rain on and off throughout the night (that supplies the drinking water out there, everything and everyone is on rain catchment right off their roof, purified of course). We used the air conditioning a total of three times - I was surprised we even had one, it was totally unnecessary since the climate is typically cloudy and rainy with cool breezes. A big memory foam bed, giant flat screen TV, kitchen with microwave/fridge, and an AWESOME hot tub on the back lanai - we couldn't have asked for more. A hotel with equal amenities would have easily been 5x the cost. I have to say that I was most surprised to have a private dryer (absolutely invaluable since boardshorts/bikinis will definitely be wet from the beach no matter how long you think they've been air-drying) and access to a washing machine (in the carport) for doing a load before putting everything back in the suitcase - a very nice addition that you'd prob pay big time for at a hotel.

Tanna was very easy to get ahold of - when we first arrived we found it a little difficult to get the door open (it's a keypad lock) but got the hang of it quickly and had no problem after that. There is a house across the carport that had other guests in it, but we never heard them or saw them once. The back lanai where the hot tub is is completely fenced off from view and very private. The lanai and all of the windows in the studio are up high off the ground with big curtains - we felt alone the entire time - and I'm sure the other people did as well.

Overall, this place is fantastic, especially for the price. It's not a luxury resort, but it shouldn't be. This is in a rainforest on top of the most active volcano in the world on the windward side of a sleepy rural island. We found everything to be PERFECT exactly as it was. This is a great place to rest and relax and a great jumping off point to explore this awesome island. Thanks Tanna!

We stayed here after staying first at The Maui Guest House on Maui. It was so wonderful to stay with the same very responsible management on two different islands! This studio is attached by a breeze way to another bigger unit. The studio is just right for a single or a couple. It is located in a quiet residential area away from the city but within easy driving to Hilo or to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We thoroughly enjoyed the quiet and comfort of a home-like atmosphere. It is a very clean well managed place to stay with the added convenience of being able to cook some of your own meals (on a double burner hot plate or in the microwave). Being able to take a relaxing outdoor hot tub soak on your own back porch is a bonus treat after a long day of hiking in the national park! We'd definitely stay here again and highly recommend the Keaau Place to anyone visiting the Hilo side of the Big Island!
