“This is the REAL Hawaii”

4 years ago today.... I was waking up and having breakfast on the lanai on my first morning in Hawaii..... We'd whip up a few eggs and toast then dig into probably the most delicious mangoes and papayas I have ever eaten to this day. The fruit from the farm was fantastic! The view... Spectacular! We'd have a morning visit from Buddy and Louie- our new canine pals for our stay. We stayed for 10 nights and could have stayed for a year! We usually made our lunch to take with us for the day. One night we cooked our yellowfin tuna from our fishing trip - out on the grill!
We had some amazing adventures on the island from Volcanoes to The hike to Green Sand Beach, horseback riding in Waipio Valley, the sunset at A-Bay to the summit of Mauna Kea and everything in between.... As big as the Big island is.... Nothing is ever too far away from this location. The tour of the farm was super and really interesting to see all the varieties of trees plants and flowers. Our floral arrangement in the room was gorgeous and the coffee was super. (I don't even drink coffee! But I did that week!). Our hosts were not only friendly and welcoming, but also old friends from school :). We think about this vacation every day and we can't wait to get back there in the next few years. This is the best kept secret on the Big Island. If you want to stay in the real Hawaii - this is the place to be!

“A nice comfortable self catering unit”

We stayed in the first floor unit, named Treetops, and had a very pleasant stay of seven nights. The 2 units are situated on a small farm of 7.5 acres which produce Kona coffee and Macadamia nuts. The owners Kimberly & Todd Killino are a very welcoming couple and gave us a conducted tour of the farm accompanied by their 2 young children and at times the 3 dogs.
This unit is not situated in a resort, and for us that was very much a positive as we try to avoid resort locations preferring places such as this which have all the facilities and are a home away from home in a foreign land. The unit is situated just south of Captain Cook in Honaunau and is therefore handy for touring the dry side of the Big Island. The Volcanoes National Park is easily reached in under 2 hours and the saddle road is just about 1 hour away, remembering that the maximum speed limit is 55 mph.
Access to the property is off the Hawaiian Belt Road, down a paved access road which crosses neighbouring properties and at times is rather rough, though these sections we understand are not in the ownership of Kimberly and Todd. It's quite close to the shopping area in Captain Cook but you do need your own transport to stay here.
We had a nice balcony (lanai) with a table and chairs but the midges and mosquitoes made dining in the evenings outside a little troublesome.
The unit is of timber construction like the majority of the buildings we saw on the Big Island and appears rustic but was clean, well equipped and very comfortable. If you are looking for a self catering unit which can sleep 4, just 10 minutes away from the sea and on the dry side of the Big Island you could do a lot worse than choose this location.
For me the relevant question is "would we stay in this unit again if we were to be in the Big Island?" Our answer would be Yes!

“Comfortable, affordable, peaceful and rustic”

We traveled to the Big Island for 5 nights and stayed at Killino Farms. It was my boyfriend, two friends, and me, so the 2 bedroom apartment worked great for us. We knew we didn't want to stay in a resort and were wanting to keep the cost down. One of our friends needed to do some work so needed wifi, and we knew we wanted to cook at least some of our meals so wanted a kitchen. Our requirements for a place weren't much. If you're going to the Big Island, I'd research first on what activities you want to do. Unless, you're staying for a long time, you won't be able to do it all. We ended up deciding that we wanted to be on the Kona side, with a day trip to the Volcano. This location was perfect for just that. The closest beach (5 minutes away) had some of the best snorkeling we've ever seen, and twice dolphins came up and swam with us. It is also next to a national park, the place of refuge, which wasn't something we planned on but was an interesting stop. When we went to the volcano, it was only about a 2 hour drive, and we had plenty of time to see everything we wanted in the park. We also decided to do a whale watch tour, which left just north of Kona and it was only about 35 minutes away (as was the touristy area of Kona).

The apartment itself is basic, but very clean and comfortable. It is also well stocked with dishes, towels, and beach items you can use. Some of my favorite moments of our entire trip were sitting on the lanai eating breakfast or eating dinner. By staying here and cooking most our meals, it made the trip very affordable. Keep in mind it is a farm and in the "country"; you'll hear animals you wouldn't at a resort. But we found the place to be peaceful. The owners are laid back and very nice. The fruit basket, coffee, and welcome flowers were great.

I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a nice place to be your base for exploring the island, not needing the frills of a luxury resort, and wanting a reasonable cost. Again, do your research on the island and decide what you'd like to do most. We left a great guidebook in the apartment also!
