“Tropical Sanctuary, Jungle-O Bungalow, Hawaiian Hideaway, Thee Best Place to Stay on The Big Island!”
Reviewed 18 January 2016 for a stay in November 2015

I consider myself extremely privileged to have stayed at Pu'uhonua House many times. This place is a Paradise unto itself situated within the greater expanse of Paradise which is the Big Island of Hawaii. It really couldn't get any better than This: the Big Island (in case you are unfamiliar with it) being Clearly the Best of the Hawaiian Islands, is one of the most ecologically diverse places in the world, encompassing 8 (or 12, depending on the source and which climate classification system you refer to) of the 13 climate zones on our planet, all within its 4,028 square mile surface, meaning you can see them all in one day, watching the world change before your eyes again and again! I digress (sorry, this place gets me excited). The West side of the island (or the dry side, or leeward side) is the best because of the weather, the beach access, the people, the culture. Captain Cook rocks because it is mostly unspoiled, totally un-pretentious, laid back, progressive, stunningly gorgeous, and central in location. So, as you can see, without even beginning to describe the house, by staying here you are already experiencing the best of the best of the best! Descending the driveway to Pu'uhonua House, you already feel the awe and wonder of knowledge that you are entering a sacred place. The property is one of the most lush and secluded in the area, tucked in a nook teeming with diverse plant and animal life. When the wind blows, the palm fronds sway in the breeze and sound exactly like rain. A neon yellow bird flutters from a papaya tree branch. You get out of your car and are instantly overwhelmed by the fragrance of the giant Champaca tree. Then you see the house: an architectural masterpiece, Pu'uhonua house is a traditional-style pole house, which means it's bones are 9 sturdy poles supporting 3 luxurious levels. The masculine dark wood is balanced with plenty of light, breeze and open space for everyone to breathe. The house feels humbly elegant, and utterly peaceful. You feel enveloped in nature, even when you are indoors because of all the open air (don't panic, there are screens). It is so nice to be here, you may never want to go anywhere! You find your entertainment watching the antics of colorful geckos. Almost every room has direct access to a lanai (or deck), some private. The main level has a wraparound deck which showcases the ultimate indulgence this house provides: a majestic, sprawling view! The jungle hillside slopes gracefully into the mouth of Kealakekua Bay, just below you. The expanse of sky is hindered only by equally deserving trees. Here, you will watch splendid tropical sunsets over the ocean in total amazement and tranquility. Then be sung to sleep by a chorus of Coqui frogs. Yes, I am abruptly terminating this review upon the realization that I could go on and on professing my Love for this place! Bottom Line: Stay Here. Aloha!

“Pu'uhonua House: A fantastic place to stay on the Big Island”
Reviewed 27 December 2015 for a stay in December 2015

My husband and I rented the Pu’uhonua House, December 9-17. This home really is beautiful - we were very happy to have chosen this property for our vacation stay. We loved having the house open to nature and welcomed all the delightful geckos! I took full advantage of having a well-equipped kitchen/grill at my disposal. This home has an incredible million-dollar view and we enjoyed many sunset meals out on the lanai – Very Romantic! Also, we took advantage of the activities offered. The “concierge,” Dan, took us out for an AMAZING (and uber affordable) kayak/snorkel of Kealakekua Bay. We saw tons of fish, swam with dolphins and I had a pretty cool turtle interaction. Mahalo to Bruce and Dan – we had a fantastic vacation!

“Everyone loved staying at the amazing Pu'uhonua House”
Reviewed 16 December 2015 for a stay in October 2015

Our extended family included three teenagers who loved having their own rooms and lots of space to move around! The bedrooms are large, the sleeping loft is an amazing hideaway, and the two sets of complete wrap-around decks give everyone an opportunity to relax, dream in a hammock, curl up in a comfy chair, stretch out on a couch, have a drink and enjoy the immense ocean views or vistas of the hills. Each day we went snorkling at Two Step or the bay or discovered other beaches and enjoyed the chairs and beach gear at the house. We swam with turtles, shopped, hiked, explored Hilo, loved the coffee museums, found great restaurants based on our host's recommendations, relaxed in the garden and never had one worry. The house is equipped with everything - from a great BBQ and complete kitchen to stacks of beach towels and games. The craftsmanship and woodwork is unique, warm and inviting. You feel like you are far away from everybody but in a few minutes you are at shops, the town or beach. The host is friendly and accommodating, has great tips, offers opportunities for kayaking and ensures you have a great stay. No one wanted to leave, and we cannot wait to return. Mahalo for the best family vacacation !

“Magical House on the Hillside”
Reviewed 17 October 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Staying at this house was a magical experience. My best girlfriend and I were invited over to the house by the owners, who we kept running into all over the island. After the fourth run-in, we were invited over for a dinner party, not knowing we'd be stepping into what I'd consider, my dream house. Entering the property, you are surrounded by tropical flowers and fruiting trees. The house towers above you, a gorgeous Pagoda-style that welcomes you in. There is space for everyone in the family. Many different rooms to choose from, on all levels of the house, even the loft, looking over the beautifully designed main living area. That space is large and open, connecting not only the living room, dining, and kitchen areas, but also the patio and loft, perfect for entertaining all your guests without anyone feeling left out. Naturally, this dinner party showed the house in its prime. Everyone was able to freely mingle around, talk to the cook while dinner was prepared, and all fit around the grand dining table when the time came.
The real gem of this gorgeous vacation HOME though, is the view. And oh my goodness! The Pu`uhonua House looks over one of the most enchanting views of the Big Island. You could get lost for hours out on that wrap-around patio. And if that wasn't enough, there is an outdoor fire-pit, and above the loft, there is the Crow's Nest - a perfect spot for star gazing after dinner. You cannot deny you're in paradise when you're up in the Crow's Nest.
The location of this house is great too. Far enough away from the bustle of Kona to appreciate the real, slowed down Hawaii, yet close enough to catch happy hour and set up your helicopter tour. The house looks over several bays where dolphins and tons of other sea life play. Kealakekua Bay is known as some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii, and is only a short drive from the house, which overlooks it. My friend and I were invited to stay the night and the next morning took the house's paddle boards down to the bay to see where the first European explorer discovered the Hawaiian Islands. Epic!
Hawaii has infinite beauty and adventures, and this house will make you want to kick up your feet and enjoy some Aloha time. This space has a seamless layout, with wide open views, all the while making you feel at-home-cozy. Everything on the island is less than a 3 hour drive away, but allow yourself plenty of time to explore and decompress here, you won't regret it!!!

“Tree house perfection”
Reviewed 4 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

This was a magnificent home to rent. We were two families travelling together with 4 adults and 5 kids (ages 11 - 18) and the house provided ample space for everyone. The galley kitchen is much larger than it appeared in photos so we were very comfortable cooking together. Not only is the home stunning, but the lanais provide amazing views of the mountain, plants and the ocean, as well as some of the most spectacular sunsets we have ever seen. The owner was very generous and helpful with his suggestions about activities too, even sharing the fish he'd caught one day. There were a couple of drawbacks, of course: While there is plenty of parking, the driveway is very steep so not for the faint of heart; there are only two washrooms which was a little crowded for 9 people; we absolutely loved the geckos running through the house, but know not everyone would be thrilled with them popping up everywhere; and while the fans were very helpful, the lack of air conditioning was very noticeable during the heatwave we experienced. Overall, though, this was an absolutely wonderful place to stay.
