We recently stopped at the Open Range Steakhouse on our way to Newcastle & the Black Hills. It's a newer restaurant with nice decor and a good view of the "open range". Our waitress had just started the previous day. It didn't bother me that she didn't know what the house dressing was or wasn't familar with the menu.
We ordered 2 kids meals and 3 steaks meals. The kids meals came out fairly promptly, with the promise of the steaks being "minutes" away. 10 minutes later the waitress said "It will just be a couple more minutes on the steaks". 30 minutes later, we still hadn't gotten our steaks! By that time, our kids had finished their meals and our plan for a 1 hour restaurant stop was blown. The owner came over and said to us "I understand it took awhile for your steaks. You have to understand this isn't Burger King. Can we offer you free deserts?" We declined the deserts because we had already spent well over an hour at the restaurant and didn't want it to become 2 hours. I felt that the owner's suggestion that "this isn't Burger King" was uncalled for and demeaning to us. We didn't expect our meals within 10 minutes- but to have meals come out 30 minutes apart is plain old poor service.
My sirloin steak was very fatty and mash potatoes unremarkable.
