Opened in 1958 through the efforts of summer residents Leo and Bella Capser, Madeline Island Museum was donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society in the late 1960's. More than fifty years after opening, the original museum looks very much like it did back in 1958, chock-full of fascinating objects and artifacts from one of the richest historical collections in Wisconsin.

It has a comprehensive history of Madeline Island as well as the Ojibwe tribe. The guides provide livable history but you can tour it on your own. I was surprised at a bill for a funeral and embalming in 1903= $7774. There is a small gift shop.

A must see for the island. Our kids had a great time & learned a lot! Watch the movie and then walk around looking at all the great historical pieces, especially all the Indian beading. Wow are those just beautiful! Then head on down into the fort buildings & see the light from the lighthouse. Our kids liked dressing up in the different costumes too!

The people running the museum are very friendly, and the exhibit does go thru several rooms, it's not very organized or specific. Most of the items are just old regional trapping or home items. Very few things were related to a historic family or event. I probably will not go thru here again, but like everything else I'm glad we gave it a try.

The museum curators have done an excellent job of recreating early life on Madeline Island.

They have a video to show put a little perspective on why Madeline Island was important not only to early fur traders, but also to the Ojibwe people.

They are also a Blue Star supporter so military get in for free.
