Opened in 1958 through the efforts of summer residents Leo and Bella Capser, Madeline Island Museum was donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society in the late 1960's. More than fifty years after opening, the original museum looks very much like it did back in 1958, chock-full of fascinating objects and artifacts from one of the richest historical collections in Wisconsin.

Enjoyed visiting the museum after taking ferry over to the island. Lots of neat artifacts and information about the area and local native american culture.

This museum does a great job showcasing the vast history of Madeline Island. Definitely watch the video presentation if you get a chance! Staff was super friendly and made great suggestions of other things to do in the area. Definitely recommend!

Lovely museum of local culture and history going back to the french explores and missionaries. Good context for visiting the island and the region. Well informed guides and docents.

This is a great way to learn about the history of the island--I recommend you start with their introductory film and then tour the museum. There was an exhibit about Pow-wows when I visited and, on the day I visited, some Ojibwe basket weavers were doing a demonstration and selling baskets-super cool! One of the best aspects of this museum was the young docent sitting in the cabin-like objects room who also answered questions and told tales of the island. A real living historian. Very, very nice!

Friends and I took the ferry which cost $13.50 each to the island specifically to see this museum. It was supposed to be open, but was closed. We went in a couple of shops and asked about it and the response was that this is not an usual occurrence. I would suggest you call before making this trip to be sure they are really open - don't trust the brochure or online info.
