Took a relaxing drift down the Little Spokane in our kayaks. Easy and accessible for all ages but... read more
The little Spokane is one of the most beautiful areas in Spokane. There is Indian Painted Rocks which is a natural area (no dogs allowed because of wild life being present at times) with a beautiful foot path Trail that follows the river. There are a few areas that are a little tricky to traverse and at one point you will need to climb over some rocks, about mid trail, so a stroller is not going to fly here. My kids love this trail at all times during the year and it's fun to watch the river at different stages throughout the spring and summer seasons. There is a nice Park to put in a kayak just before reaching St. George's private school. And you can ride the little Spokane River all of the way down to Long Lake and there is a take out there just before actually entering the lake. One of the best trips in the area. If water isn't your deal and you like to run there is a full loop Trail with plenty of elevation to climb. The trail is about a 7 mile loop and it leaves from the Indian Painted Rocks parking lot as you pass by the restroom. Great Trail for a workout or beautiful sights over looking much of the best scenery you can find around Spokane. And, if you've got a mountain. Bike, you've got an amazing day of bike riding ahead of you.... Have fun!!!
Although near town and with some nearby homes, this is one of the best natural areas I've ever visited. A three-hour canoe trip down the Little Spokane River offers true beauty & Mother Nature at her best with plenty of wildlife from turtles & racoons to deer & moose. Weekdays offer a quieter time with less river traffic.
A nice area that is relatively close to downtown Spokane. The river is slow moving so it is good to float and easy to kayak. Also offers some easy hiking trails, which makes it a nice area for families.
If you are a bird watcher, go here and be prepared to hike. Catbirds! in Washington and a handful of other songbirds that you won't find to the west of Spokane. Watch for rattlers and take bugspray, water, a hat, and a walking stick. Some parts of the trail are a little tricky, so if you have balance problems, sit near the beginning of the trail or explore the paved area.
Best seen on a weekday early in the day if in the summer time. As the water drops, there are more snags to avoid so the area is best paddled earlier in the summer or even in the spring. Would have seen more wildlife if had been able to have the area to ourselves. On a Monday (mid-morning) a large group got to the launch site just before us. Too many people, especially talkative ones scare the wildlife away. Next time we will go early in the morning.
Grandparent settled here in early 1930's and I spent all my summers exploring, fishing and hiking here. Beautiful, clean and cold river. Abundant wildlife in the valley. Heron rookery. Fishing not so great anymore, but wonderful setting to stroll or float on a hot summer day.
