Owner description: Museum chronicles the history of the Isle of Wight County with a special emphasis on water, ham and agricultural industries. The exhibits include prehistoric fossils, Native American and Colonial artifacts, a turn-of-the-century country store, displays interpreting the Smithfield ham industry and perhaps the museum’s most notable artifact: the world’s oldest, edible cured ham.

When the town motto is "Ham, History, Hospitality" you expect an interesting experience. The museum certainly delivered, featuring local history spanning the first Native American residents through today. Of course, the trip is not complete without viewing the world's oldest cured Smithfield ham and the oldest peanut. I thoroughly enjoyed the museum and highly recommend it to anyone who will be in the area.

Nicely appointed museum sharing history of the establishment of county, agriculture, local life, and how Smthfield ham company began. Very informative, lots of displays, timelines, period clothing, artifacts, and great tactile displays for children or adults. A definite hands-on learning museum. No one should miss this gem. Once done, pop into the Christmas Store across the street.

We thoroughly enjoyed this museum of the finds from earlier periods in the town of Smithfield as well as the wonderful sights of nature that can be found. I particularly loved the 115 year old ham with the collar that Mr. Smithfield had saved.

A unique museum full of historic Isle of Wight artifacts. The mock country store is a favorite of young children.

History on display in an entertaining and interactive atmosphere. Not easily handicap accessible and some areas a wheelchair cannot go but it can be a quick stop and worth the time.
