Owner description: Museum chronicles the history of the Isle of Wight County with a special emphasis on water, ham and agricultural industries. The exhibits include prehistoric fossils, Native American and Colonial artifacts, a turn-of-the-century country store, displays interpreting the Smithfield ham industry and perhaps the museum’s most notable artifact: the world’s oldest, edible cured ham.

History on display in an entertaining and interactive atmosphere. Not easily handicap accessible and some areas a wheelchair cannot go but it can be a quick stop and worth the time.

We spent a lot of time here absorbing the history and culture of Smithfield and the whole of isle of Wight Counnty. The re-creation of the general store brought back so many memories, the movie was interesting and the lady on the front desk was friendly and helpful. The largest ham and the oldest peanut were unexpected bonuses.

Isle of Wight County Museum is a small place with interesting exhibits on local history. There is an small room that is set up to look like an old general store and displays on the agricultural history of the county. For a small museum the exhibits are really nicely done. It only costs $2, so it worth checking out if you are in town. And of course you get to see the world's oldest ham!

I knew nothing about the area and by the time we left we got to see the World's oldest peanut and smoked ham. What more could you ask for. Very informative museum. Displays were very well done. Short 11 minute film on the area. Off street parking available. $2.00 per adult to get in is very well worth it.
After you leave the museum walk around the area and look at the historic homes. Wow!!! Overall a great time.

Interactive museum for the whole family. We have gone several times over the years. It's a free museum and when family comes to visit and such we take them to see "the ham". They shut down briefly for repairs and we couldn't wait to go back. Great adventure for a little day trip in downtown.
