The Complete El Senador / NH Krystal Review

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Jan 2006
Hello, my two friends, boyfriend and I (ages 23, 23,25, 26) spent one week at El Senador resort in Cayo Coco November 18-25. In advance, this will be a long review, as I hope to be as helpful to other travelers as other reviewers have been for me. When I travel, I do have fairly high standards, and have been to the Bahamas, Aruba, and the Dominican Republic in the past, so I do have a lot to compare El Senador to.

Booking, Airport, Arrival

We booked through Sunwing Vacations and flew on the brand new Sunwing airlines on it’s second day in operation. Check in with Sunwing went smoothly. Our flight was on time, but the plane had to be de-iced… 15 minutes later we were on our way. Inflight service was per usual, with free champagne to celebrate the new airline.

Arrival in Cayo Coco was fine, but be careful what you have in your carry on! My small alarm clock radio was almost taken away! My boyfriend didn’t bring his ipod for fear of it being taken away by security, although we saw several people with them at our hotel.
The bus ride to El Senador was only 20 minutes. Bus was air conditioned and comfy ( I wish the plane was that comfy!)

Hotel Check-In

We checked in at the Laguna Azul lobby. Both sides of the hotel were open for high season even though we were told that it opens for high season December 1st. We all had the VIP package (simply because we wanted the villa rooms on the lagoon). I thought we were supposed to have a separate check-in, but we didn’t. There were only 2 parties in front of us anyway. While waiting, we were promptly served fruit punch to drink. We were pleased to learn that our rooms were ready (it was about 1:30 pm). We were assigned villa #2442 and #2460. We had requested to be close together, but it didn’t work out. I understood beforehand that it probably wouldn’t. It did make it a little difficult for us to meet up, as there was no room-to-room calling. We were taken by trolley/golf cart to our rooms.

Rooms (Villas)

Clean! Beautiful! It was our own little cabin! Dark wood interior with tiled floors. The living room had a pull out couch, and a door that could be closed off from the rest of the room. There was also two chairs and a coffee table.

The bedroom had tow double beds that were pushed together to make a huge king, but they were made up as two separate beds. The bathroom had a sink, full length mirrors, closet, bidet, toilet, shower and tub.

The little patio was nice too. Lots of previous reviews said the lagoon reeked…..occasionally it did for a brief minute, like when the wind caught it just right. Even though our villa faced the beach, its true that you can’t see the ocean or beach from it. A bank of mangrove trees separates the lagoon & hotel from the beach. It works really well to protect the hotel from wind, so even if its cool and windy, its hotter on hotel grounds.

Water pressure was good. Water was warm, not hot during peak shower hours in the morning and evening. It was hotter later at night 9-10pm.

Our room was cleaned everyday and our sheets changed. I put the towels I wanted changed on the floor & they were always changed. One day the floor wasn’t swept and was a little sandy. Each day I left 2 convertable pesos & little trinkets like candles, slippers, bandaids for the maids. There were 2 of them that clean the rooms together. They were very nice & appreciative. On our last day they left us a thank you note in broken English!

**Note: Bring Kleenex, there is none provided. Also washcloths, an alarm clock.
Electricity is 220V, not 110V like home. Same kind of plugs, but it fried my friends alarm clock!

The mini fridge was stocked daily with cola, juice boxes, canned beer, and water. It wasn’t the coldest, but was ok.
The air conditioning in my villa was ok…didn’t make it cold, but kept it good enough. Same with my friends’ villa. I think the problem is there is a skylight in the villa, so the sun shines in all day. Keeping the curtains closed helped. I never opened the windows because there were no screens and I didn’t want mosquitos to get in. There were quite a few mosquitoes. Not just around the lagoon, but throughout the hotel grounds.

Orientation Meeting, Sunwing Rep

I must complain about the time this meeting was scheduled. Everywhere wlde I have been, they have it in the early morning. We arrived at 1:30 pm Friday, and our meeting was at 3pm Saturday. Kind of broke up our day!! We were able to book our excursions at least so it wasn’t a total waste.
Another complaint I have is the hours that the Sunwing rep was available. One hour a day, 5 days a week! I find that unacceptable! We should not have to schedule our vacation to suit the rep’s schedule. It is not his fault, he works at 8 hotels, and the Sunwing company makes his schedule.

Beach

There were 4 different walkways leading to the beach. The beach itself was gorgeous. It was a little narrow when the tide was in, but got wider between 3-5pm. There was some seaweed, but not mounds of it, and it was raked everyday. Lots of shells for the shell seekers! We never had a problem getting a beach hut. We would walk down towards the end of the beach, and there was always 5-6 deserted huts… I guess some people didn’t want to walk down that far!

The sand was very fine and white. Overall it was great, however I enjoyed the beach in Punta Cana Dominican Republic better. There was a coral point on the eastern end of the beach, and it was nice to snorkel there during high tide. Lots of little fish and urchins, sea fans, brain coral. You can borrow masks and snorkels from the water sports center. Kayaks, and catamarans were also available to borrow. Paragliding is available for $40 CUC, but you can haggle over the price. One of my friends went and loved it!

There is a man that sells coconut drinks on the beach. Be sure to bring $3.50 CUC to try one!

Pools

Very nice! Looked clean and inviting. No signs of algae or slime mentioned in other reviews. We never swam in either, as we prefer the beach, but there were lots of lounge chairs and bars near by.

Hotel Grounds and Lobby Areas

Both lobbies were nicely decorated and open air concepts. Lots of little sitting areas with comfy wicker chairs and tables. Both lobbies have their own gift shops for souvenirs, snacks, rum , etc. We found that both lobby bars had the best selection of liquor. The bartender in the laguna azul bar is AMAZING! You should see the tricks he can do with ice, bottles, and glasses.

One night at supper time they sprayed for mosquitoes and it fogged out the whole lobby. It was very foul smelling and unhealthy. Why they would do it at peak hours is beyond me! I’d rather get a few bites than lungs full of insecticide fumes.

The hotel grounds were gorgeous and very spacious. It was never crowded at all! A lot of the palm trees are only 6-10 feet tall as the resort is only 5 years old, but this didn’t bother me at all. It was still plenty lush looking. The walkways were always clean too. The lighting could have been better at night , and there could have been a trolley service to bring guests around the resort because it is so huge. All in all, the atmosphere was great, and we didn’t mind walking a lot through the beautiful grounds.

Excursions

There are numerous excursions available. For the full list, email me. These are just the ones that we went on.

Boat Adventure (formerly jungle tour)
This is offered every day at 8, 10, 12, and 2. We went at 8am. We got to drive our own speedboat through the mangroves for about 35 minutes to our snorkel site. At the snorkel site, there were coypus in the trees.. They’re like little otters and were very friendly. I fed them some bagel that I had brought for the fish. The snorkeling was ok. Water was a little murky because of the mangroves. We had a 35 minute boat ride back through open water. It was a lot of fun!

Colourful Cuba
We were picked up and driven to mainland Cuba. Our guide was helpful in telling us a lot about Cuba in general and the area.
Our first stop was at La redonda marina, where we were taken on a boat ride on a fresh water lake through the mangroves.
Next we stopped at a sugar mill that had closed in 2000, where we toured the mill, and watched a show of how the sugar cane used to be processed. We went on a steam train ride through the plantation to where we were served a traditional Cuban lunch. We had sugar cane juice, roast pork, black beans and rice, fried plantains, fresh fruit, cheese, rolls, and drinks. Delicious!
After lunch we stopped at an alligator farm to hold and see alligators.
From there we went on to the town of Moron, where we took a horse and buggy rise through the town. Then we had an hour of free time to walk around and shop. There wasn’t a lot of shopping, but the town was quite nice.
The last stop was at a local bar, where there was live music and drinks. We were dropped back off at the hotel around 4:30pm.

Half Moon Island Catamaran
About a 45 minute drive to Playa Pilar, a nice beach, where we were taken by boat to Half Moon island. The beach was rocky and small. We got 45 minutes to snorkel. The snorkeling was good, but there was a fair current, making it a little difficult. We had a lunch of lobster, shrimp, and drinks.
We caught the boat back to Playa Pilar, where we had 1 ½ hours to enjoy the beach. Beach chairs could be rented for $1 CUC.

Restaurants

We ate at all the restaurants at the hotel. Reservations can be made between 8-11 am each morning, As VIP guests, we were able to book all our meals in advance. Also, as VIP guests, the VIP restaurant was available at no extra charge, but would be well worth the extra $$.

“El Crucero” Vip Gourmet

We ate here twice. The piano player is very good, and the service was excellent. The food was awesome. Menu items included:
Lobster bisque, beef carpaccio, and escargots were appetizers.
Rack of lamb, duck, lobster, and filet mignon in 3 pepper suace were some main dishes.
For dessert, pear cheesecake, chocolate cake, ice cream, and fruit were available.

“La Sirena” Snack Bar 24 hours

A variety of fresh fish, poutine, pizza, hotdogs, hamburgers (actual ham, not beef) were served and were all delicious!

“El Malecon” Seafood

Located on the lagoon, the food here was really good as well. Menu included:
Grated seafood crepe, gazpacho, salmon pate, and soup marinara were appetizer choices.
Entrees included chicken Florentine and grilled squid among others.

“El Pincho” Steakhouse

Located near the Emperador lobby, the steakhouse was excellent as well. The service was a little slow here, but it was also really packed when we were there.
Appetizers included marinated vegetable salad, and French onion soup. Both were tasty, but the vegetables we mostly peppers, so beware of heartburn!
Entrees: Steak, skewer with peppers, onions, ham, steak, and sausage. Tasty!

“El Gallo” Cuban and International

The international section of the menu was available for suite and VIP guests only. I don’t think any of us ordered anything off of the international menu section.
Appetizers include vegetable salad, salad campenisa, and fish cocktail (just like tuna salad). Each was tasty.
Entrees included Cuban chicken- awesome! Deep fried pork, pork loin (was very dry) and steak (very tough)

Beach Snack Bar

Located right off the beach… BEWARE THE CHICKEN FAJITAS! They were deep fried and stuffed with something like chicken salad. They made my boyfriend and I a little sick.
Quesadillas were yummy, as was the poutine and hamburgers. They were out of nachos while we were there.

“La Piazza” Italian and Mediterranean

Mediterranean section was only available for suite and VIP guests. It is a small section of the menu and wouldn’t be worth the extra $$.
For appetizers, there was an antipasto table with lunch meats, pasta salads, breads, etc.
The menu included a variety of pastas with choice of 6-8 different sauces. Also different pizzas were available. All were tasty!

Buffet Restaurants

DINNER- ok, not a lot of choice. Usually pork, chicken, and fish. Vegetables were kinda mushy. The a la carte restaurants were much better.
BREAKFAST- good, wide selection of yogurt, cereal, breads, bacon, sausage, pancakes, French toast, potatoes. They had a custom omelet/ egg bar.

“El Caney” Cigar Lounge

We loved the cigar lounge. It had a really nice atmosphere, comfy couches, good selection of drinks, and of course a cigar shop. It was only open until 10pm, and would’ve been nice if it was open longer.

Money Exchange

The rate of exchange at the airport was $.02 cheaper than at the hotel. The bank at the hotel is open about 5 hours per day. Lines can get quite long, and it isn’t always open at the time it says it will be.
NOTE: You pay extra when you use your credit card to buy anything. EG. 65 cash became $73 with credit card.

Checkout and Departure

Checkout was quick, no line.
There was quite a few shops in the airport, as well as duty free.
Our flight was delayed ½ hour, and we boarded the plane which still had people on it, to find out we had to fly into Holguin to drop them off and pick up more people.

Everyone was unimpressed, especially since we had paid to preselect seats at the front of the plane, only to have to sit at the back. The plane had not been serviced, and was dirty and stinky as it had come from Toronto full of passangers.
The flight to holguin was only 25 mins, and we had to get off the plane for them to clean it. They were quick, only took ½ hour, then we were on our way home. Normally this would have really upset me, but since the airline had been in business for one week at this point! They were working out some kinks!

Overall, the trip was wonderful, the hotel was a true Cuban 4.5 star, and I can’t wait to go back this coming April.

Please feel free to email me with any questions, additional pictures, or excursion information.

Thank you to all the trip advisor reviewers that helped me to choose this hotel!

first of all to this person from Montreal who went to El Senador January 10th 2006 you can tell you are from Quebec. When we went for two weeks in 2003 alot of people from Montreal were there and they kept insulting the staff and thinking they owned the place just because it is canadian owned. I am from Ontario and proud to be a canadian and had lots of fun and interacted with the staff. The food was very good and we had no complaints what so ever. The rooms were always clean and the service was excellent. I would return there anytime. The weather was great and the musicians were something else to hear. So grow up and maybe you should go back and look at what this place has to offer instead of trying to put it down because it is canadian owned but don't forget it is not owned by you. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I just returned from one week at the El Senador (Jan 14-21) and found it to be great for a Cuban resort. The resort itself is very clean and the food has something for everyone. You have to keep in mind that you are in Cuba with embargos on them and they can only feed you what they have which is mostly fish. My husband loves fish so for him it was great but I hate fish so I ate a lot of pasta. The grounds are kept immaculate and the maids also keep the rooms spotless. Freddie the bartender at the lobby bar is fabulous. Cappuccinos are amazing. The only thing that would turn me off this place is that tipping is not only accepted but EXPECTED!!! Even the gardeners have their hands out all the time. No tip, no service, simple as that! You can tip in any kind of currency and the maids love to get clothes. Take the half day trip to town to see why the people have their hands out for tips. These people have nothing and get to watch us tourists come in and eat and drink like pigs right before their eyes. This is my second trip to Cuba and will be my last unless their govt system changes. If you go, take every possible thing you may need because you can't buy it there, eg. tampons, tylenol etc. Just keep in mind that it is Cuba and you will appreciate all that you have.

I had a great time at this resort. We stayed there from Dec. 30st-Jan 6th, new years was awsome. I was kinda nervous about going cause I was ready on here about people saying that it was super dirty food was horrible and stuff like that. But I had no problem at all. The place was always clean the maids were really nice and the gardners would often make us presents even though there was a HUGE language barrier. The staff were really fun and great. We were staying in a Junior Suite in the Emparedor side but we mostly stayed at the laguna side pool just because most people we met were over on that side and we prefered the bartender there (Axle). The beach is just.. wow i've never seen a beach like that and i've been to Dominican, Mexico and Cuba. We went on the boat tour we had a lot of fun made our trip, it was nice to do something different. Anyways I'd go back there in a flash I don't know why people were complaining, obviously it's not Canada the foods gonna be different and yes the water in the shower is gonna be cold if you take your shower at the same time as EVERYONE else in the resort!!Anybody got any questions email me.

My fiancee and I, along with his parents, went to El Senador from December 24 to December 31, 2005. I had a wonderful time since it was my first time going somewhere outside of North America. The beaches were beyond belief, the resort itself was amazing. It was going a bit downhill because they were changing ownership as of January 1st 2006 so it wasn't as great as it could have been ive been told. My fiancee's mother was there previously in April and told us it was much better in April. OH WELL!!! The food was okay... we tryed the a la cart restaurants but decided that the buffet had more variety. The food was good though, do not get me wrong. I did get sick one day, but i took some medication and I was fine. We had great pressure in our showers and warm water. I do not know why it is such a big deal when people do not get hot water... I personally do not believe you need hot water in that climate! The rooms were HUGE (we had a junior suite) the beds were two queen size beds pushed together!!! HUGE!!! We got some channels mostly american stations though. The lobby bar is THE place to hang out if you like watching the bartenders do some crazy stuff with bottles and drinks. The swim up bar was awesome. We stayed at the newer side (can't remember the name). We were a little disappointed that some food items at the Beach Grill were not available but we managed to find something else good to eat. The pasta salad is to die for. 24 hour bar and food is there. There is no 24 hour room service though, which would be a plus but we made due. I read on here about alot of jelly fish, which we did find i think 2 of them on the beach when we were there, but that was when it was cloudy and a storm just went through. There was alot of jelly's in the lagoon. And yes there is a smell to the lagoon but you get use to it after awhile. I did not mind it all. The maids were great and appreicated the gifts we gave her, she even wrote us a letter the day we were leaving. The New Year's Gala that they had was great... lobster and everything at the buffet!!! There were a lot of childern that just roamed around without supervision and without supervision in the pool. Also a lot of young adults (approx. 15-17) that were taking advantage of the alcohol. Some were a little annoying. There was one lady who decided to tan top-less. I think she should have gone to the adults only pool to do that. I had my hair braided for 25 convertable pesos because we were nice to the attendants at the pool and he put me in touch with his friends. TIP!!! my one advice is to TIP, and TIP nicely, you will get a better experience and better service, believe me!!!
And do not bud in front of people at the buffet line or in any line as a matter of fact. Its rude and you are suppose to be on vacation.
We took a day tour to the citys, which was cool. the boat tour was the best part of it
We took the speed boat tour as well. That was awesome except we couldn't go high speed because of the stupid lady in front of us kept going slow. Word of advice: if you are uncomfortable driving a high speed boat, do not take that tour!!!
Email me if you want more information.

My boyfriend and I just got back from El senador, we stayed from Jan 8-15. I would say that overall it was a great resort, definantly some areas that need improvment but nothing is ever perfect.
FLIGHT- The flight was great we flew Air Transat. I liked it for they played cuban music and showed images and trivia of cuba on the small televisions to get you in the mood and excited. We arrived at the airport in Cayo Coco. Its crazy how small the airport is, you have to actually walk off the airplane onto the ground. It does make for a great picture though. Customs and baggage were fairly fast. TIP- when exiting the airport you will talk to a representative to find out what bus to take. Beside the reps are a line of men with carts wanting to help you with your luggage. It makes it seem like they are part of the tour help but they do expect a tip and actually ask for it in cuban money which is hard for usually you havn't changed your money yet. The bus ride from the airport to the resort is short (15 min)TIP- Sit at the front of the bus so when the bus pulls up to the resort one person from your party can quickly go to the lobby and check in while the others wait to get the baggage from underneath. This saved us about an hour for we were about the second people to sign in and the line was estimated at over an hour.
ROOMS- After check in a worker in what appears to look like a golf cart will usually offer to drive you to your room and help with baggage (these people do not expect a tip, but it is nice to give on occasion) We styaed in a Villa on the lagoon. This was absolutely amazing. everything about it was perfect. We Were 2450, which is very close to the main walk way of the beach and the seafood resturant. There were two sections to the room, a living area right when you walk in with a couch, chair and a table. Then there is a hallway leading to the bedroom. The washroom was great, always clean. The bedroom was good. Although they push to double beds together so if you like to cuddle it can be hard. The balcony that we had, had two table and a chair.Sitting on the patio during the day or night was quite relaxing. It was fun to look over into the lagoon to see all the creatures. We had no problem with bugs, in the room or out on the lagoon. I brough bug spray for I heard about the horror stories of the mosquitos on the lagoon, but i didnt even take the spray out of the package. Where the villa we were in was located there was no foul smell at all (near the path for the sea food rest and the beach) but where some of the other villas were located the smell was disgusting. The good thing about the staying in a Villa is that you get the VIP package which includes access to an amazing resturant, access to the jacuzzi on the lagoon beside the cuban resturant and other intersting things. The sheets did have stains on the them, so did some of the towels, but they were always clean. The first night we arrived our room had no towels. We both wanted a shower but were unable until we got towels the next day. The television in the room does have almost all Canadian channels incl HBO and TBS. We tipped the maids with some small gifts from the dollar store (pens, pencils, paper, make-up, candy, toiletres etc) We also gave her a bit of money. They were very greatful and even wrote us a thank you card at the end of our stay.
FOOD- It is true what most of the reviews say, the food is definantly not good. I am a very picky eater, but my boyfriend is not. I found the buffets to be horrible. Although the El Emperador side has a waayyyy better selection of buffet then the Laguna side. Breakfast buffet usually had bacon, eggs fruit cereal. There was an omlet station where a man would make you an omlet. Lunch was basically they same as dinner. Pasta, meat, fish, minimal sea food, salad bar. Although for lunch its good to eat at the grill by the pool. They have pizzas (which are amazing) poutine, pasta, hamburgers (these are nothing like in canada, the meat is not the same)But overall the food was very blan. The pepper is not real pepper. so bring little packages if u like pepper. The ketchup is not ketchup either, its weird and watery. The A la Carte resturants were great. VIP was definantly the best by far. The butterfly lobster was incredable (very large) The Italian was so/so. The resturants had beautiful atmospheres, esp the sea food resturant on the water. They also say that men must wear long pants to dinner, but i saw many men wearing shorts. They make the drinks super strong in Cuba:) Even when you ask for a drink with a little bit of alcohol it still is hard to swallow. Plus if you are a vodka drinker (like myself) be prepard the vodka tastes like rubbing alcohol. I found my self drinking a lot of the vodka I had bought for myself at the duty free in toronto.
POOLS- There are are Five pools. Three on the laguna side and two on the El emperador side. The adult pool is on the Laguna side, but I found that pool to be to quiet for us. The two pools with the bars (one on either side) always had alot of action goin on. They had step classes, water polo, fashion shows, mini contests, karaoki, bingo. These activities were always intersting. The water was a little bit to cold to swim in for me personally. Although there were a few people swimming. It was never really hard to find a chair around the pool, which was nice. The beach towles they give you are very warm and thick, which was a great surprise. There are also two jacuzzis. One is located on the Laguna side, this one is one the lagoon is a grass hut near the cuban resturant (amazing setting, very romantic) The other is on the El Emperador side near the gym and the tennis courts. The pools architecture was awesome, neat designs very eye pleasing.
BEACH- The beach is definantly a sight to see, gorgeous! the water was crystal clear the sand was very white. The water was even warmer in the ocean then in the pools. There are usually alot of activities on the beach, volleyball and games. There is also a guy that sells amazing drinks made with rum, juices and fruits and the glass is a coconut. Those were very interesting. There is a bar at the beach, which is great and the drinks there were very good.
ENTERTAINMENT- There are shows that take place every weekday at around 9:30. They are either a hit or miss. The first show we saw (monday) was great. I laughed so hard, they also involved audience members which made it better. The other shows were interesting although after a while the dancing can get a bit repetative. The comedies are definantly better, although the comedys tend to not be appropriate for children. This was a shock since many audience members were children. There is a bar near the show that is very fun, they play good music and the bar tenders are very friendly. Also the two bars in the lobbys on either side are very happining at night time. Although the El Emperador bar at night tends to be a bit better. The cigar lounge on the lagoon is a definate must for everyone. Very nice atmosphere, the drinks are amazing (they are actually served in proper drinking glasses) They have a cigar shop in the lounge. The jazz band that plays there is great, they play all sorts of music...very very fun. The place gets packed at night so make sure to get there before 9 if you want a seat. There is also a pool table in the lounge. There is a disco on the resort on the laguna side. It isnt open every night. On the nights it isnt open the disco is at "The Cave" you have to take a bus too go there, it goes direct from the resort.
WEATHER- Our first two nights were cold. I had to wear two sweater. It is also colder on the laguna side, since there is a strong breeze coming from the lagoon. TIP- If you are goin in DEC, JAN or FEB bring some nice warmer clothes. All my nice clothes I brought to wear at night were to cold to wear, so I ended up having to wear the sweater that I came from Toronto in every night. Some nights it went down to 10, which I was not expecting. The days were very sun hot, but once the sun was gone the heat also disappeared. We did have some really hot days though which was awesome.
Overall the resort was good. I dont think it was worth the money. We paid alot for the trip (around $2800) If I were to stay in a nornal room and pay $1600 it might be worth it value wise) The only thing that was a big disappointment was the food. It doesnt seem like it would make that big of a difference but when you living on blan food for seven days it can take a toll. The atmosphere was incredble and the staff was great. TIP- There are many souviner shops at the airport. They have teh same souviners as the resort except they ar ealmost half the price at the airport compared to the resort. We bought akeychain that was 2 pesos at the resort at the airport it was 30 cents. TIP- If you have a weak stomach I would suggest to get the oral diarreah vaccination two weeks before you go. I got it and I had no problems with anything at all. My boyfriend didnt and he was sick a few times and on the last day he was actual quite ill. Trust me its worth it. I would definatly return to Cuba, but I would like my next vacation to try a sandals resort (since we payed a little under a sandals price anyways) But I must say the vacation was paradise, relaxing and very enjoyable.
