“Could do better”
Reviewed 28 April 2012

Stunning location but they need to do more. Menu is rather limited and trying to be more / better than it actually is. Menu can be perceived as pricey. Limited choice for vegetarians. Service at the bar is so slow. Would like this place to perform do better.

“Excellent food”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

We recently ate here. Great menu and food was superb. Only criticism is that the main course arrived too quickly after we had finished our starter. We did ask for a delay between our main and dessert and this resulted in 3 different members of staff regularly asking whether or not we were ready to order!. Perhaps one waiter/waitress per table would have been better. Would definately recommend this hotel for a meal

“Reliably good simple food”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

Have eaten here many times for family lunches, mostly on Sundays. There is a good choice of Sunday roasts which are excellent despite having been pre-prepared. Other simple choices have also been good fresh meals. Food and drink orders are placed at the bar. Reservations are accepted indoors. Outdoors is a pleasant pub garden area with views from the headland across the Severn Estuary. The building is a large historic ex-hotel built by IK Brunel as a staging post for trans-Atlantic boat passengers landing at the peir down below. The building still maintains the old character, but can be rather chilly indoors during the colder months.

There are enormous function rooms upstairs which we have used, though the service upstairs was very patchy.

“Royal lunch”
Reviewed 18 March 2012

A very enjoyable Sunday lunch. Service was prompt and unobtrusive, the prices are very reasonable. The quality of the food good and a reasonable portion size. There are outside tables but it was just too cool for this time of year. the views over the Severn estuary absolutely fantastic.

“Great food, great location.”
Reviewed 7 March 2012

We have just had an excellent meal at The Royal this evening. It was a family outing and they reserved us a very good table. I'm vegetarian and Coeliac, which is normally quite hard to cater for as it's so restrictive, and there are cross contaminating issues with food preparation, but I have to say from the moment we stepped in nothing was a problem. They very kindly made me up a dish that wasn't even on the menu, cooked my chips in a separate fryer, and even provided me with a gluten free dessert. I couldn't have asked for more. The crockery, cutlery and glasses were immaculately clean and the service was very good. Looking forward to returning in the warmer months when we can sit outside and look over the sea!
