“ok ish but not an experience I would repeat”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

I thought this would be a lovely way to meet up with family but actually it felt like an average experience. Previously we had all met up in the Farnborough hotel and this was good- somehow with the same formula (of excellent facilities e.g. gym, restaurants and starbucks being in one place) this experience was not as good. I think a big reason for this was a large party going on in a section of the hotel that had been hired out. Due to this the quality of the food suffered greatly in other parts of the hotel. There were a ton of annoying children running around and I found it all very irritating.

The rooms are very average in size. You have everything you need so comfortable I guess. No 'do not disturb' sign so the cleaner nearly walked in.

The food was disgusting - especially the breakfast. There was a hair in my milk to which we complained. The breakfast felt like a 'halls of residence'- people were being pushed in and out like cattle. The sausages looked uncooked.

A male gym worker was rude and told my husband off for not returning the towel to the correct place- this was humiliating. How was he to know? Although an excellent gym there was no water. I felt like I was going to pass out and there was no water?!! At least I could not find a water tank.

The bar had no cocktail list and many drinks you could get in most pubs were not in this one- not impressed.

I have no reason to return to this area ever again. I think if I did I would not visit this hotel. I may try another devere village hotel.

My friend and I stayed here for one night on the 3/8/2012. We had a great time. We arrived early and was allowed our room early. The room was lovely, very clean and stylishly decorated. The breakfast was beautiful and couldn't fault it in any way. All the staff were pleasant and really helpful. We used the pool, the sauna and the Gym and they were all clean, and well managed and not too busy. Overall we had no complaints and the loveliness of the hotel just made our first stay in London all the more special. I have looked to visit the hotel again but the prices apear to have gone up :/ !?

If you want to stay on a dirty industrial estate, in a hot, grubby room, faulty air com, you can't open windows as they allow people to spill out into the car park from the bars below until the early hours, have rude staff, poor food, get overcharged and be kicked out early because they are busy (especially as they take money in advance) then this is the place for you.

In a nutshell, didn't stay here unless you are really desperate or have low expectations for a high price.

Our experience took place on the weekend 11/12th August 2012.

Made a telephone reservation, offered a standard (£82) or an upgraded room (£112). Upgraded room chosen. Money was charged on card in advance (a new policy!) Charged £112.00 per night.

'Upgraded' room was on the 'Village deck', upon entering room we could see that the room was simply not clean. Called downstairs and they sent up a cleaner who couldn't believe how filthy the room was. Dirt (not just dust) on tables. Carpet stained. Dirt and old food under bed. On entering bathroom, there was one item missing..... a bath. This so called upgraded room had a small shower where the drain plug area was all grime and black. The sink was not clean and the mirror had old toothpaste splashes. Every surface in the room was covered in dust.

Manger was called and we were informed that as we didn't request a bath, we don't get one! If we wanted a bath, we should have asked for one! He agreed would move us, but it would be a standard room. At no time did he say we would still be charged for the upgraded room.

The replacement room was not dirty but was very grubby. Most surfaces were dusty and the venetian blinds were caked in grime. As it was now getting late, We chose to accept the room. Big mistake. We should have upped and left. We the realised that the room was for less able guests. It had a low bath, low sink, wide doors etc. No toiletries, just a pump action soap dispenser and 3 very poor quality towels and a stained bath mat.

Warm night and Air con didn't work properly (reception knew about it but said it was centrally controlled and could be fixed until after weekend) Windows overlooked front cark park, very noisy as people spilled outside from pub/club at the hotel plus wafts of cigarette smoke.

Had an early breakfast (around 9am) basic buffet of dried up usual stuff, runny eggs, cheap carton juice, DIY toast, tea etc. very poor and restaurant was packed.

Returned to room to rest for an hour until checkout . Check out is 11.00am. Housekeeping banged on door at 10.15 and said that she was busy, can we 'go now'. We refused but she returned at 10.40 and demanded we leave, 'it is now time you must go Now'

At reception we saw duty manager. We explained everything to him and he did not apologise. He blamed company policy on everything including asking guests to leave early!!! Apparently it is Ok for housekeepers to ask guests to leave early when they are busy.

He then offered us a £12.00 off our room rate as a discount...... on the £112.00 room.

We had to stand in reception and explain to him that we had a £82.00 room, therefore if he was offering a discount, it should be £12.00 off the £82.00. Therefore he was over charging us by £20

Manager would not budge. He said that as we booked an upgraded room, we had to pay for an upgraded room, despite the fact we had a standard room. It took 15 minutes of arguing before he relented and took off the extra £30.00. he only did this as reception was packed and people were getting agitated and concerned listening to our complaints.

This is possibly one of the worst hotel experiences for years.

Room Tip: Find a different hotel.

Ok, lets start with the hotel, if you have stayed at De Vere village hotels that are new or have had the make over, then you know what you are getting, this hotel matches that expectations, location, straight forward to drive to, parking, readily available, rooms, goor standard, food, breakfast was yum, hot and cold, restaurant - Boca De ..... yes fine eat their on first night with voucher, worked out great, great service tall friendly waiter was fab (and we got free waffles from him as a promotion the last day) thanks. Service on reception, Jaques - very friendly and always busy, all reception ladies polite and nice to me and the kids. Leisure facilities - spot on however childrens swimming times are very restricted so check with hotel as they have to be out by 12pm and then 2 - 5.30 pm, so not much room to manouevre. Victory pub, fab good food decent prices, good beer, great service from the ladies in the afternoon, oh yeah and the young ldaies in the breakfast fab working, especially the one with glasses and long pony tail, sorry forgot your name to put it in the review. Now to travel to London ----- 2 options tube from Edgeware or train from Elstree/ Borehamwood... we did Train everyday 5 minutes in car and £5 for all day or £3 after 10, well cheap and very very very convinient, when you get to train roundabout turn left and its on your left, perfect...... train from Elstree to St Pancras 25 minutes, then the world is your oyster, adult train and day travel card zones 1-6 £8.50 kids £3.20, good value...... we will be back in october for sure......... thanks De Vere

Room Tip: Family room is a King with 2 single temp beds
