My husband and I travelled to Barcelona for our 30 wedding anniversery and struggled to get any accommodation in the centre so we went to Calella which turned out to be great.
The Train from Barcelona with one change got us straight into Calella and the Hotel Volga was less than 3 mins walk away. It is virtually on the beach and located great for exploring barcelona. The Hotel was clean, we asked for a sea view room and they happily obliged. We stayed bed and breakfast, breakfast was well breakfast, with enough variety of eggs, bacon, pate, cereal, toast, breads and fruits plenty of fruit juices, coffee etc.,. It has a small pool and seating area outside which was a sun trap was a pleasant area really nice for coffee and reading the papers or have a drink before going out into the town centre. There are many cafe, bars resturants and we tried several in the immediate area of the hotel. The prices were good we thought a good tapas, bottle of wine was approx 28 Euros the portions were really big and we would spend the whole night there. The beach just across the road always had something going on and a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We would definitely go back but would like to try other resorts but where ever you stay the centre of barcelona with all the tourist attractions are easy to get to using the metro and train links and all at really reasonable prices. Would denfintely recommend both hotel and location of hotel....

Room Tip: Rooms at front give you a nice view over the beach and are big, but need to be on top floor to have...

My Granddaughter and I stayed in this Hotel in April , the food was self service with a great choice,After six drinks were free, the staff are friendly. Every evening there is entertainment, also the hotel is in walking distance of Calella. Also Barcelona is well worth a visit. We went for nine days and enjoyed every day.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony .

The Volga is a well-run hotel in a pleasant seafront town. At the price, its deal for B&B is exceptional, the rooms outstanding, it has a pool, and the location ideal for the local rail network into Barcelona, which will cost you just a few Euros for the one-hour journey to Plaza Catalunya station.
Don't expect exceptional food - the meals are from a buffet of perfectly wholesome but largely unimaginative fare. But at Euro15, dinner's great value for money if you are OK with plain food. Breakfast is OK, but Volga charges for real orange juice (in the country which grows oranges? I don't think so) and the coffee is from a machine, and not great.
The rooms have minimal sound insulation, so be prepared for a little noise from your neighbours (who are mainly retired folk, so not particularly noisy), from the rail line just 100 metres away (but it's electric, so again not too bad) and from anything being staged in a marquee on the beach (German oompah bands when we stayed!)
All of these downsides are more than compensated by the superb staff, who speak English and are truly among the best you'll find anywhere.

This is an extremely well-managed hotel, with excellent staff who go out of the way to make your stay enjoyable. Staff also speak excellent English. The food at this hotel cannot be faulted either, with excellent breakfasts and an evening buffet menu with plenty of choice. Wine at 7 euros a bottle is also a great bargain in these cash strapped times.

There are also a lot of activities to suit all members of the family, including games, dance nights and flamenco evenings. Board games are also available and there is a well-managed pool open between 8.00am and 8.00pm - so no noisy swimmers in the early hours.

Although the railway station is right outside the hotel, it isn't noisy and is an asset as you can travel to and from Barcelona for 7 Euros. Our only caveat is that the bedroom walls are thin and you can hear other people's televisions and conversation. We were fortunate to have a couple with a young child next door, so they kept reasonable hours and we slept well. Our stay was not at the height of the season, however. If you had young people or teenagers next door, you would not be so lucky and might be disturbed in the early hours by returning revellers.

That would be our only reservation. This hotel is one of the better ones we've stayed in on a package tour and it really is so well-run it would be churlish not to give it a good review.

My mother and I were happy how our stay in hotel "Volga" in Calella turned out. The location of hotel is perfect for combination of beach vacation and as a base for site seeing using public transportation including day trips to Barcelona, Girona, Figures, Pubol, botanical gardens in Blanes and Lloret del Mar, boat ride to Tossa del Mar. Train station is 2 min walk away and we could actually see the train station platform from our balcony. Before the trip I was really worried that this train station would be a constant source of noise for us. But it was not at all a problem but an advantage.
Hotel "Volga" general atmosphere comfortable and quite. Plenty of different seating zones in the lobby, at the bar area and by the pool. Hotel clientele are mostly elderly or not so young couples who are usually around in the lobby playing games or talking at the bar or pool areas. Some families with small children and young looking people are around during breakfast or dinnertime but they are usually gone somewhere all day and night.
Our room on 4th floor facing the sea was spacious and we really enjoyed our balcony. Beds were comfortable; cleaning was done nicely, towels were changed if you drop them on the bathroom floor. Liquid soap dispensers are provided by the sink and in the shower tube but there were no bottles with shampoos, conditioner and lotions. So, bring your own. The safe in the room can be rented for 3 euro/day or 20 euro/(week or whole stay).
Hotel front desk is very nice and friendly, they speak several languages including English and some speak German, Russian or French.
Restaurant room is decorated in warm soft colors. Restaurant buffet is very abundant although the variety of food is the same for breakfast and more or less the same for dinner. Yet, you can find what you might like. Some fresh fruits (oranges for breakfast; bananas, kiwi, pears, apples for dinner) and vegetables were always available. We had a half board package and when we were planning to miss our dinner or breakfast because of late excursions or early departure it was possible to order at the front desk a day in advance some cold dinner to be brought into your room or morning coffee at the bar.
Hotel is in front of the sea but you still have to walk a few blocks to rich a passage across the railroad to the beach (same for all hotels in Calella). Do not be scarred by cemetery, it is not really visible behind the wall. Beach club provides umbrellas and towels (ours were included in the price of privilege room). The walk along the railroad past train station takes you directly to trees-lined alleys along the sea. Main shopping and walking street "Carrer de l'Esglesia" is one block from hotel.
Every room on all 4 sides of the L-shape hotel building has a balcony. In my opinion, the best side was our side directly facing the sea. We had some morning sun; semi-shade during the day and afternoon shade that saved us from the direct sun heat and allowed us to enjoy fully our balcony during days we stayed in Calella. People on the western side were sunbathing all afternoon long. But I am not so crazy about sun. The balconies on eastern and northern sides of the building looked rather narrow. The eastern side is facing some school and might be noisy. The northern side is facing Jovara Street and I guess it should be noisy because of car traffic on this one-way street. Passing cars rather noisy but trains were not at all. There is no any trains passing between 11.30 pm and 6 am.
The pool area is small and exposed to the glances from balconies. The pool area was not really used in second half of May when we were staying. No more that 2 people sunbathed there and mostly on the days with some strong wind at the beach. Some not so young ladies were sunbathing topless. During evening people liked to seat around pool with drinks and/or books and these seats are mostly hidden from the balconies. Some entertainment was taking place in the bar area on all nights except Saturday. We only saw Flamenco dancers on Friday night.
Travel practicalities: Direct train to Barcelona center (plaza Catalonia) is 1 hour 15 minutes. Take advantage of T10 multipersonal ticket (27 euro for 10 single trips between Calella and Barcelona plaza Catalonia that could be used by several people). If you go to Figures or Girona you have to take train to Macanet and then to change to another train. All train tickets can be bought in Calella train station, train station attendants speak English. Buses at Blanes train station await for trains coming from Barcelona.

Arrival to hotel "Volga" and departure: You can easily and comfortably take train from airport to "Volga" hotel what I did on my way back. Unfortunately, I booked a "shuttle service between airport and your hotel on Costa Brava/Maresme" from Orbits website where I was buying my airplane tickets. I did not like this service. First, I had to stay in airport for extra 2.5 hours after sleepless overseas flight while the driver was waiting for arrival of some other clients going to Calella and Santa Susanna (it was not really his fault but plane arrivals were delayed), then after about 1.5 hour drive with traffic problems in Barcelona and I was dropped on the main street of Calella because this shuttle bus happened to be too large for the narrow streets around "Volga". I had to walk about 10-12 blocks with a suitcase without any map, clear direction and not knowing Spanish to ask for some help. At the front desk I was advised that driver was supposed to call to "Volga" front desk and "Volga” would send their small van to pick me up with my suitcase. So, if you decide to take a shuttle bus, call to "Volga" for advise, instructions and arrangements. Be aware that commute to Barcelona might have some traffic problems. My mother happily took a bus arranged by the tour company that sold us the "Volga" package.
On my way back I decided to take a train with a transfer at the Barcelona Sants station to the airport train. Transfer was very easy: train from Calella arrives/departs at platform # 7, I took elevator up and down to the adjoining platform # 9 from which train towards airport departs/arrives. I had to wait for about 20 minutes for the next train to airport. Several shuttle buses to the terminal # 1 were awaiting for arrival of the train. I only wish I took a train on my way to "Volga". I was told that taxi ride would cost about 150 euro. Just compare: 3-4 euro without worries vs. 150-200 euro with unpredictable traffic problems. One day they had repairs at some train station on the way to Barcelona, the shuttle buses were provided by RENFE but whole trip took 30 minutes longer. However, they announced these coming repairs in advance. So, you can plan accordingly.
