“Good hotel for relaxation and sport”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2010

With a teenage son who is sporty we booked this hotel on the strength of the reviews on here and the unusually good sports facilities on offer. The location is stunning but make sure you get a sea view as the rooms without such views tend to be next to the cul de sac for various service vehicles and visitors to the Lido. Check-in was swift and painless although as happened several times during the holiday the staff were more comfortable speaking German and hence the English translation tended to be "edited highlights"! As a result we were not advised at check-in of the meal deals available for B&B guests but not really a problem as we didn't intend to eat in the hotel more than a few times given the choice of local restaurants.

Our rooms were clean, comfortable if a little dated and the terrace with sea view and garden with sunbeds was a real plus point. Breakfasts were good and there was the usual choice you expect supplemented by a DIY omelette service where you select your fillings on a plate and hand to the chef to make your own omelette whilst you wait. Recommended! If you have a birthday whilst on holiday I advise you not to skip breakfast that day!

The public areas and pool are immaculately kept and the pool snack bar is open all day. They have a "happy hour" for certain drinks and for Kaffee und Küchen which is good as drinks are quite expensive otherwise. If the wind stays down you can use the terrace for breakfast and dinner. There are 3 dinner options - a buffet style dinner in the main restaurant which we weren't tempted to try, the fish restaurant at the Lido which was excellent and the Italian restaurant in an adjoining block which was OK.

Guests are invited for a tour of the facilities twice a week and I attended and found it interesting. Luckily I understand some German so could follow most of it (I decided not to put up my hand when the lady showing us round asking (in German!) if anyone was English and then mopped her brow in jest when no one raised their hand. In fact I am not English but that is splitting hairs). The spa looked interesting and everyone was given a leaflet for the huge amount of treatments available but when I asked if there a leaflet in English for my wife they apologised and said no just a brief price list. But it does look good.

Now to the sport: in addition to the wide range of off-site activities we were attracted to the range of sports available - squash, spinning, basketball, volleyball and football as well as the gym, indoor pool, weights room and the sauna. Having been at other hotels where team sports were organised we looked forward to meeting other guests and making new friends but it didn't happen. You receive an activities programme when checking in and 2 to 3 times a week the 3 squash courts are converted into a sports hall and a vote is taken as to which sport is played. That's the theory. On the first occasion my son and I and one German chap turned up to find around 20 locals playing squash. It was clearly a competition and there was no prospect of team sports so we gave up. Second time our German friend had given up and so were two and no effort had been made to convert the squash courts so we asked if we could borrow a basketball and one of the nets was lowered in the end court and we played for an hour one-on one. We were grateful to the staff for allowing this as otherwise we would have had to go away a second time. The third time we looked in but again no-one was about so we went for a walk instead! The gym and sports centre are actually a sports club also for locals with a large membership so squash competitons clearly take precedence and as a result there is no organised team activities as you might expect. But the facilities are good.

I would say 90% of the guests are German. This is not a problem for me as I speak a little German and have had many holidays in Germany and have some very dear German friends so this isn't about one nationality over another but inevitably everything is German-centric and as long as you don't mind that you will enjoy this hotel. My biggest problem was that most guests seemed to be happy just to chill out and not be bothered by anyone even fellow German guests so there wasn't much of a feeling of camaraderie I would say even amongst the German guests. Maybe it is marketed as such and that is what folk like there. It became clear to me why team sports were out - most folk just wanted to be left alone!

All in all we had a good holiday for a good price and compared to the other hotels in Canico I was glad to be there.

We have been visitng the islands twice yearly, two weeks in summer and again at christmas and new year, now since 2003, and have been staying, at different hotels each year for the experience, and this was our first visit, and enjoyed it so much, the service was outstanding excellent, very warm and friendly, couldn't do enough for us, always asking if we needed anything, made us feel very special from the moment we arrived! The room was large, bright, modern, airconditioned with plently of storage and fantastic veiws, offering more or special pillows, blankets and coathangers if required, good clear hotel directory and info leflet of all activties taking place in the hotel during the week . Room service was very friendly, whist providing anexcellent service !
The location an views are truley breathtakinly beautiful, this hotel is one of three, hotels that amke up Galo Resort, their are three in total, side by side, giving you the use of all the facilities in the resort, the gym was the best i have ever seen, three squash courts, two out door pools, one of which is on the roof terrace, with plently of sunbeds around the pool as well as in quiter areas to sunbath, as well as plenting of outdoor seating to, relax, both in or out of the sunshine. Outside toliet and changing area and most inportantly, life guards, at all pools, daily! Their is one indoors pool that was beautiful, with a jacuzzi, sauna, steam rooms...so many places to relax!
wide choice of bars and 5 restrants, with excellent, staff all spoke english, extremly friendly and helpful, always making us feel very welcome, smiling, and nothing was ever too much trouble, giving the customers a truley excellent service received, always! The food in the fish restrant was outstanding, in enland we would say 'ala cart' or 5stars, for choice, presentation, taste, we had many lunches and dinners here, and the same, goes for thye food in the bar upstairs, making it extremley hard to choose where to eat, it was always made freshly, by people who care passionately about food and such value for money.
Having private access to the sea, within a small cove, where you can snorcal and seeall the different beautiful fish, and a life guard on duty all the time, made us feel very safe.
Everything you could wish for, when you go on holiday, whether you wish to relax, or want a more active holiday, its available!

Every where is of a very high standard, you really dont have to need outside the resort,

The best holiday we have ever had, and have already booked to return for this christmas holidays!

This was one of the most satisfying holidays my boyfriend and I have had in a while. Ondamar is a hotel complex located on the clifftop about 20 mins by car from Funchal town.

Plus points: perfect location for hilltop walks, wonderful views; extremely friendly and helpful staff (who speak fluent German and English); great spread in breakfast buffet and three other top restaurants on the complex for meals and snacks; first class gym with three squash courts, table-tennis, modern cardio machines and a full programme of aerobics, pilates classes etc (gym also used by the locals); we had a sea view room and the view was fantastic.

Minus points: we were a little deflated when we first arrived that the furniture was not quite what we had expected of a four star hotel.. in places the corridors could have benefitted from a coat of paint and some furniture was scuffed - however, everything was always kept spotlessly clean; walls/ceiling at times seemed paper thin - we sometimes heard the resident above walking about and engaging in what sounded like furniture rearranging; but these two negatives were very quickly forgotten as the hotel ticked all the main boxes for a relaxing break with a sports element.

Some other points to consider: - When we were there (last week in January) the hotel guests were mainly (German-speaking) pensioners, although I understand this varies depending on the season. - A regular bus connects the hotel to Funchal town (20 mins approx) - There are no strands to speak of in this area, although the hotel has a seawater pool down by the water's edge, accessible by steps and lift. (Ondamar also has an indoor and outdoor pool within the main complex). - The hotel organises excursions, sailing, diving, walks, on-site events such as wine-tasting, dancing, card games or presentations on the local area on a daily basis. - Ondamar also offers a wellness programme with message etc, but we didn't avail of these.

If you are not looking for wild night-life but rather a relaxing break in a very friendly environment with swimming/sports facilities, then Ondamar is the hotel for you. I would not just recommend this hotel but will stay there again during my next trip to Madeira.

This Hotel is located 15 mins away from the Airport. From the moment our transfer collected us from the airport we were treated like kings. The food in Canico was so cheap and so good that we had three course meals everyday for lunch and dinner, the Hotel's breakfast was amazing and a great selection.

The hotel is located ontop of a cliff, overlooking the ocean, you can go down to the rockface with a lift and we swam in the sea just as we pleased. The reception organised a ferry to take us to Porto Santo, it is a must see!

The hotel staff were excellent and the leisure facilities were outstanding. On our last day we had spa treatments, the SPA has a huge variety of treatments, from facials to deep tissue massages, ayoveda, joga, manicure and so on.

I recoment this hotel to anyone who is looking for a quiet break on a island paradise.

  • Liked — It was clean and very good quality. Great location.

Stayed at this hotel in September. Had a great holiday. Its a German run hotel and most of the guests are either German, Austrian or Swiss. All the staff speak excellent German, English and Portugese.
We stayed in one of their comfort rooms witha fantastic sea view. Room was large with a lovely comfy large bed. Bathroom was well fitted out and included bath robes. The balcony was of an ample size with furniture.
We stayed B&B which was a buffet style eat as much as you like. The choice was outstanding and quality even better. You could have either cooked breakfast, cole meats and cheese, cereal, pancakes, omelettes or fresh fruit. Breakfast didn't finish till 10 so plenty of time for a lie in.
There are five eating places within the complex. I can fully recommend the fish restaurant and the Italian.
There are 2 outdoor pools and 1 indoor pool. There is no fighting for sunbeds as there are plenty available.
The complex has a gym and spa which is free to use as a paying guest. I took advantage of the beauty treatments available. These weren't free but very reasonable in price.
The Manta sub aqua diving centre is also based at this hotel.
It costs 20 euro in a taxi to Funchal but only 1 euro 50 to go by bus if you're brave enough, they're a bit mad those bus drivers, safe but mad!!
Canico town is 6 Euro by taxi and about 25 mins walk away. This is a lovely place with several good restuarants.
All in all this hotel is well worth a visit and we'll definitley be visiting again next year.
