Try the spade fish a la Lareira with banana and maracuja sauce with batata-doce. At the end, try a glass of lemon poncha.

Canico isn't huge but has a few cafes and restaurants, and I think in my week staying at the Quinta Splendida, I tried them all. I enjoyed two evening meals at a Lareira, and both were pleasant and averagely priced for what I had. The restaurant on both occasions was fairly full (in contrast to La Terraca, which I see is rated more highly than a Lareia. I don't agree.) I was travelling solo, and not made to feel awkward dining alone, and would say this is the best dining option in Canico, food wise and from an atmosphere perspective.

Good local food at reasonable prices served by local staff, with good humour and a sense of theatre. We eat in this restaurant three times in seven nights because it was so good. The meat on a hot stone is stunning and the meat skewer (a typical Madeira dish) is fantastic. I highly recommend.

Ate at a Lareira for the first time, it's situated in the middle of Canico right opposite the village square. Very nice/ mock authentic restaurant for the tourist trade. Food was good and plentiful, and the staff friendly and helpful. We had prawn cocktail / grilled muscles followed by spaghetti bolognese and 'local meat kebab' (beef on a sword/skewer) washed down with house rose. All very nice and good value, but not fantastic.

Lovely restaurant, aimed pretty much a tourists with its mock beams and meats barbequed on 'swords'

However the steak cooked to order on a hot stone and the fish of the day were both very good.

This is probably the busiest restaurant in Canico, but as long as you are not after quiet candle lit romance then the service, reasonably priced wine and variety of locally inspired dishes on offer should have you coming back for seconds.
