Citta di Castello is a little out of the way, but it is well worth a visit, and Residenza Antica Canonica is the perfect setting for your stay. Located right next to the cathedral, in a building that features a fresco from the 15th century, this place is just pervaded by the medieval charm that makes Citta di Castello so exceptional. Elisa is an excellent hostess: she went out of her way to make sure we got our key even though we arrived very late at night. The apartment we stayed in was perfect, with lofted ceilings (the pictures don't do the space justice) and great windows that let the breeze and sunshine in. The kitchen and bath worked perfectly, and the room was well decorated with appropriately antique-looking furniture. From the Residenza, it is an easy walk to the main Piazza and all of the restaurants along the Corsi. Oh, and you absolutely cannot beat the value. In short, if you're looking to stay in Citta, this is the place.

Room Tip: Wifi works best if your room is close to the main office. No screens on the windows, but enough of a breeze usually to keep the bugs out.

This enchanting residence is situated in the old "Canonica" of the Cathedral of Citta' di Castello, next to the famous round bell-tower, one of only two existing in Italy.
The entrance is through a small shared hall, leading to the inside, through a lift : when you get out of the lift, you are inside the passage of the ancient residence of the priests, with a very high vaulted ceiling, with small doors opening to the various apartments.

Our apartment was very large, with a well fitted kitchen with solid timber doors and real granite counters, a bedroom with a sumptuous double bed with posters, an enormous bathroom (at least 20 mq) and with high vaulted ceilings throughout with wooden beams across.

The view from the windows : a beautiful scenary of the red roofs of this old city all around us. The apartment was spotlessly clean, and the owner was very helpful and kind to us.

We will definitely return to Residenza Antica Canonica soon !

Room Tip: try to get room 2 or 3

Città di Castello is itself charming enough, but this hotel beats everything. The room was in fact a suite; all the basic facilities (good shower, plenty of hot water) were there, the service could not have been more friendly. Definitely THE place to stay in Città di Castello.

What a great place to stay. La Residenza in a strategic position, next to local shops, town center and free parking. It is a old and restored residence where the medioeval arches at the doors are amazing and there is a renascimental painting at the end of the corridor; the appartments are confortable and spacious, open the windows and you can literally touch the tower of the beautiful cathedral. It is also managed by a nice and polite, very Italian girl called Elisa. I can advise this place to everybody; I absolutely loved it.

I have stayed at Residenza Antica Canonica several times, most recently for three weeks in June 2013 with a group of Australian travelling companions. I’m an enthusiastic “slow traveller” and for me the Antica Canonica ticks all the right boxes. Strategically located in the historic centre of town and well connected to public transport links, we had everything at our doorstep: restaurants, shops, markets, public transport and all essential services. We even managed to visit Assisi, Spello, Perugia, Arezzo and Sansepolcro using local transport.

The Antica Canonica has unique ambience and character. Its nine apartments were once used as accommodation for priests of the neighbouring cathedral. It has since been restored leaving the historic outer shell and many original architectural features, including a beautiful circular campanile and a 15th century fresco. The apartments are spacious with high ceilings and lovely views of cobbled stoned streets, rooftops and the countryside. The décor is simple and unpretentious. My apartment had a large bedroom (with a good sized, comfortable bed), bathroom, separate living-dining room and kitchen. The kitchen was equipped with the essential items you would need to prepare basic meals (hotplates but no oven). Some of the apartments have two or more bedrooms.

Elisa Mambrini, the dynamo who manages the residence, was a valuable font of local knowledge and unfailingly professional, considerate and cheerful in her demeanour. From day one, Elisa went out of her way to make us feel at home and nothing was too much trouble.

The apartments are self-serviced and self-catered (unless you make special arrangements). This makes the Antica Canonica’s rates very attractive when compared to some of its competitors. Personally, I’m happy to make our my own bed and prefer to prepare my own breakfast. It makes for a more relaxed holiday but also means the savings allow me to extend my stay.

All in all, I recommend the Residenza Antica Canonica for individuals, groups or families interested in an authentic and relaxed sojourn in central Italy and looking for good value for money.

Room Tip: Three of the apartments are arranged on two levels, some with very steep stairs which may be unsuitable for older people, children or anyone with mobility issues. If you have trouble with stairs, be sure to ask for single level apartment. Wi-Fi reception is available in the common area and is stronger in some apartments. If you need constant internet connection, ask Elisa which apartments provide the best reception.
