Went during big spring break and we had a blast exploring. A little disappointed that no one was there to do the show and tell.
The dinosaur’s outside was really cool and hands on. On our trail walk we came across a lovely and informative volunteer near the eagles and then again by the wolf.

I spent a lovely Saturday morning here with my nieces and nephews, who range in age from 6 to 20. The museum is a combination science/nature center and zoo of animals indigenous to Virginia (250 species). The indoor part has educational displays about the different types of environments (mountain, plain, swamp, cave) with hands-on activities, as well as some smaller reptile and amphibian habitats, aquariums and a touch-tank of aquatic life like rays and starfish. While we were there, one of the staff was giving a presentation with snakes that visitors could touch. A cafe and a gift shop are located on the first floor near the entrance. Outdoors there is a wooden boardwalk that winds 3/4 mile through the forest and passes habitats for larger animals like foxes, deer, wolf, beaver, bobcat, etc. There's a popular learning and play area called Dinosaur Discovery with dinosaur sculptures and a picnic area. Children can "dig for fossils". The boardwalk passes through an aviary, over a pond and ends at the demonstration gardens. There's a greenhouse and examples of native plant and conservation gardens. A separate building houses Abbitt Planetarium; hours and shows vary by season so check the schedule on the website. Wheelchair access to all the exhibits - including the boardwalk - is very good. I think this attraction will delight children up to about 12 years old, but my older nephew was not very engaged. The admission price is somewhat high so plan to spend the day to get the most for your money (adults 13+ $20, children 2-12 $15, planetarium add $4). Guided "behind-the-scenes" tours are available for additional fee. Military I.D. gets $1 discount. There are also coupons in local tourism guide magazines. I didn't mind the price because it's a non-profit organization and I support their conservation goals. A facility like this is expensive to operate.

We really had a good time exploring the exhibits. The exhibits we're very informative, and well done. The museum seems to carter more towards younger visitors. Lots of stuff for young children to do, but still worth it for adults as well. Unfortunately the outdoor animals are mostly nocturnal so they are sleeping during visiting hours.

Great indoor and outdoor exhibits. Displays show various ecosystems found throughout Virginia. The boardwalk allows you to walk through different habitats and see a variety of animals. The outdoor dinosaur exhibit looks like great fun. Clean, educational, a little pricey but worth it.

This place is interesting, but really expensive. There is a small military discount and a huge gift shop with a build a bear, penny press machine, postcards, etc.
