I was very happy to stay at El Maltese. The owner, who is indeed from Malta, lives on the premises most of the year. His name is M. Fluti, he's a businessman with experience in the hospitality industry, and determined to make El Maltese a destination hotel. I stayed there for two nights and really enjoyed my stay.

The reason I've given four stars is that there's still a lot of work to do - the previous owners let things run down. Some workers were painting, and others were building the upstairs suite while I was there (but they always asked if it was okay to start work.) The service was excellent, the people are all nice and helpful, and they speak English if you need it.

Some of the things that I really liked:
- The strong breeze off the lake blows hard and constant this time of year. It feels like a tropical beach, with the palm trees in the garden and just across the street in the park.
- You can watch the horses and cattle forage lakeside in the morning, and chat with the herder if you like.
- The breakfast was excellent: the fresh fruit, eggs, gallo pinto, and juice is a mountain of food.
- The hotel is about fifteen minutes away from the center. For me, that was great, but some people might not like to be so far from the "action," and some might be afraid to walk a couple very long blocks at night. (A taxi costs about $1.) You will see more tourists than Nicas in many parts of town, by the way.

I didn't like:
- the bugs there, but that is true of many places in Granada, thanks to the rainy season and the enormous lake. Be prepared to use repellent when if wind dies down.

- the restaurant is not open for business, except for the breakfast.

Overall, I really enjoyed my stay and would suggest it for others. There are also two brand-new bikes for guests to use, so claim them early if you don't want to walk.
