“Wrinkles ironed out - definitely worth a 5th star”
Reviewed 14 February 2017

Three years ago I fell in love with this place but there were definite "wrinkles" in the experience. This time it was pretty well faultless.

We took the rather cripplingly expensive Narmada Suite (as an indulgent consolation for having to cancel our whole trip to India last year) and it is certainly one of the finest rooms I have ever stayed in. Numerous windows and a "sit-out" all overlooking from on high the various pilgrimage scenes beside the holy Narmada river and filling the room with light. It was a place just to LIVE for a few days, with no great need of the various interesting excursions in the locality.

The food was generally excellent, though some (not me) bemoaned the thali-style service at dinner time. Kunta Bai seems to have grown into her role as the manager of all things domestic (rooms, meals etc) and gave us a warm and attentive welcome throughout our stay.

Unforgettable and certainly to be repeated (when we can afford it!)

If at all you want to experience how the Royals lived in India way back in the 18th century, visit and stay and experience the old world charm. The real old restored royal rooms facing the mighty river narmada, with ancient temples and traditional art festivals along with amazing food.

Room Tip: View with narmada river

This was an absolute discovery and I recommend it highly. My brother, son and I spent two nights in a beautiful room and loved every minute of our stay. Unlike other holiday properties, everything from laundry to evening cocktails were taken care of. My son thoroughly enjoyed his strolls in the fort and the attention he got from the staff was simply unbelievable. I think this place is visited basically by "grown-ups" but they sure knew how to make a 9 year old happy. The river ride in the sunset, the meals under the open sky, the thoughtfully crafted menus for breakfast through dinner all just made me want to come back for more. I also indulged in shopping at the REWA store attached to the fort. All in all, this was one of the highlights of our year long all India trip.

It is not exactly tourist place for me. There is a fort made by ahilya bai holkar on the narmada river. Although it could be very beautiful place if government maintains it property and honestly. You can go there with family and spend some time to do boating, gorse riding etc. Don't stay here. Nothing much to see inside fort except fantastic history of holkar dynasty written by Mr. Ganesh Matkar from Indore.

Hello Sachin2net
I think you must be thinking of some other place. There is no gorse riding, the fort is full of historic temples and a center of maheshwar's famous sari handloom weaving..I wonder where you were?

It's romantic, magical, not touristy, a living fort that was inhabited by a historical legend. The people that run this place go out of their way to make it perfect for you. I cannot recommend this place enough. The food is superb, the service even more so. The mighty Narmada river flows by at a lulling current. Beautiful plants and different spots for daily lunch and dinner. The many many sights to see around will have to wait for your next trip - you will not feel like leaving this place your first time around (or ever). My wife and I went last week for our anniversary and they did a special dinner for us. imagine our surprise - just the two of us with a thousand little lights under the Ahilya sky. Mr. Holkar has truly resurrected a gem. Stand-up salute Sire. The real jokers in the pack; my modern day heroines are Aimee and Kunta behen. Ably assisted by Archana, Julie and Jung Bahadur. Take all the comforts of the present century and place them in a most secluded, romantic old fort with a view and you have Ahilya. Go now.

Room Tip: Imli and Neem have great sitting spaces with fabulous views. Also secluded courtyard just for these...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The majestic 250 years old Ahilya Fort sits on the edge of a cliff, high above the sacred Narmada River, surrounded by the beautiful and unexploited town of Maheshwar. The views over the river and ghats are exceptional. Replete with myths and legend, Ahilya Fort offers guests a rare chance to get off the tourist trail and an abundance of things to see and do. With the fabulous, deserted city of Mandu nearby and the famed island temple of Omkareshwar even closer, this is a place at which to spend time and relax but from which you can also explore the area, undisturbed by the other tourists – a stroll down through the town to the ghats is a must. The food is delicious and it’s all-inclusive so, once here, you pay for nothing – be it food, excursions or e-mail! The pool is lovely; terraces and shady areas abound; meals are taken in different areas of the fort; the charming rooms and tents have superb views, balconies & gardens; the weaving center here is famous nationwide. A boat trip at sundown is something you will never forget. Truly a memorable place where you could spend days or weeks! There are 10 bedrooms scattered around the premises and the rates include full board and all excursions. It is the most perfect base for visiting Mandu (1 hour away) and is just a 2-hour drive from Indore. It makes the perfect place to end or start a holiday, as there is so much to do. From here you may also visit Dhar, Baneshwar and Omkareshwar. Being a gourmet himself, your host Prince Richard Holkar has the highest standards and the food here is delicious. Staying here is like a time wrap as the village is still enclosed within the fort itself and is truly wonderful to explore in your own time. ... more   less
