So different than any 'chain' lodging facilities, Col Alto has a rich history dating back to 1827 when the mansion was built on 328 acres. Today it houses the registration offices, parlors and 10 'manor rooms', faithful to the period, but with modern updates .
Google the history, but in 1997, two Virginia families bought the mansion with 8 acres.
Beautifully incorporating the mansion into the modern Hampton Inn with 76 additional rooms, the grounds are carefully landscaped, and its an easy walk to most of the attractions and great selection of restaurants. Service here was impeccable, and we had one of the most comfortable and enjoyable in many years of traveling.
We stayed in the McDowell King Manor Room on the main floor, with a private side door to a patio that led to the pool and hot tub. Super comfy beds, linens and towels along with the great Hampton Inn amenities, including a better than average breakfast.
We are already planning a return trip. Highly recommend this wonderful hotel.More
