“Black Raspberry Yum!”
Review of Kline's Dairy Bar

Kline's Dairy Bar
Ranked #3 of 8 Dessert in Harrisonburg
Price range: US$ 3 - US$ 8
Description: Hand scooped custard style ice cream. Each location makes their own fresh ice cream each morning for the day's sales. Flavors are vanilla, chocolate and weekly special. The weekly special is subject to change on Wednesdays. Our menu includes a variety of milkshakes, sundaes and banana splits. Proudly serving Greenberry's coffee. John Kline began Kline's Frozen Custard with the help of his father, Grover Kline, in downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia. The ice cream stand was located in the first floor of the family's house and customers were served through a walk up window. While working at the ice cream shop, John began courting a young woman across the street at the dry cleaners. Bess went on to marry John. She became the well known and loved face of Kline's. She worked the front window for decades. In 1974, John Kline died and Bess sold the business. A gentleman named Sam Fletcher owned the store until 1979. Mike Arehart became the owner of Kline's in 1979. Sam Fletcher stayed on for an additional year to teach him the ropes. Bess Kline also stayed on and became a wonderful friend and teacher to Mike. Over the years, Mike has added some new flavors and products. He has stayed very loyal to the Kline's philosophy of quality. Now Mike's sons work in the business as well. Mike owns the Harrisonburg stores.

My daughter's favorite spot to walk to from JMU. While visiting this past weekend, our family walked downtown for some ice cream. Chocolate and vanilla along with a flavor of the day (which happened to be black raspberry). I had a kid's cup which was the perfect size and my husband got a chocolate/peanut butter milkshake, which he loved. It's soft serve and worth every penny. My daughter regularly keeps track of the flavor of the day so that she knows when to go for her favorites. And whenever we are traveling in the area, we always stop in for a cup. You order at the window and it seems there is always a line but it goes quickly.

We saw this place while driving through and decided to stop. Easy parking, cute place with outside seating. Ice cream was great! I had the special flavor of the day - raspberry cheesecake and my daughter had a peach sundae.

As a bonus there's a cute mural painted across the street. Made a great photo op for my teenager :)

Thank Laura P

Great Ice Cream, almost every flavor you can think of. And it's smooth and creamy, not like other places were there are little chucks of ice in the mixture. This was great!
