Attraction details
Owner description: The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection is the largest collection of Indigenous Australian art outside Australia, and comprises over 1800 objects and paintings created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from different regions of Australia. Visiting the Kluge-Ruhe is a terrific opportunity to learn about a different culture, view a film of artists creating and discussing their art, and see the gorgeous views of Charlottesville from this museum on a hill. An exhibition of works from the permanent collection is changed annually, while special exhibitions in the rotating gallery change every four months. Special events include lectures and performances by visiting artists, scholars, and musicians, film screenings, and educational programs for all ages. A free guided tour of the current exhibitions is offered each Saturday at 10:30 am.

Want to kill 30 minutes waiting for your x-ray results at Martha Jefferson? Not a bad place to do it. Some rich guy left his collection to UVA. It's Aboriginal. Only kinda interesting.

Stopped through on a visit to UVA. Was pleasantly surprised with the quality of their pieces, and I am happy to say that I learned a lot about Aboriginal art!

The aboriginal Australian art is displayed in small doses in a series of rooms, including suggestions for children's exploration as well as general explanatory placards. There is also an area for creating and sharing your own original art.

Don't let the name of this museum deter you. The art is original, surprising and very beautiful. And if you are lucky you will be there for one of their special events, which are really special.

This private museum houses only aboriginal art, making it a unique experience. If you are unfamiliar with this genre, you will be awestruck by the colors and patterns. If in Charlottesville, it is well worth a visit.
