My grown daughter and I stayed at the Inn the 2nd week of August 2011.
The Inn itself is like stepping back into time and enjoying the wonderful, easy elegance of 1899...It is truly An American Castle in Vermont!! 3 Huge Floors that twist and turn - wonderful play room, game room....the sleeping accomodations are pretty much all different in size, layout, amenities, some with shared bath, some private. The appointments in each room are rather unique and lovingly prepared. We stayed in the "Cherry Room" and shared a couple bathrooms in the hall with a couple of other rooms. This was never a problem and the rooms all had wonderful robes for everyone! :) Upon entering our room we were also met with a plate of organic apples and Shelburne Farm Cheddar!! Wonderful!!
The Inn was once a private residence--look it up, it's worth the long read. If you have small children they will love the aspect of being on the farm - visiting the 'barns', petting the animals, hiking in the woods - the Inn is located inside Shelburne Farm's 1400 acres!! The trails are extensive and well marked for family and youth hiking....Hills and vistas of the lake are stunning - it would be a wonderful Honeymoon stay--in one of the top rooms - WOW!! Romantic!
We signed up for the 'Fresh Vermont" dinner - a once a month outdoor gourmet dinner - We've been all around the world and this was one of the best dinners EVER! The chef had everything tasty and VERY beautiful in colors and textures! It was fun to mix and mingle with local residents! We had a great time!
We also hit the right time to sign up for the once a month offered 'Cheese Making Tour'....it's a tour of the farm with their head cheese maker explaining the full process starting with pasture lands, incredible 'barns' and calves!! His knowledge is evident in a nice way! :) We learned how the farm values it's niche with good farm management. (It has awards for green management.) Great to watch the actual process in action--wonderful opportunity to taste all the varieties of cheese they make! Definitely worth trying to coordinate your visit with this tour - however, there are other tours available at the farm, as well!!
The Inn is a jewel and they are constantly working to improve the grounds and restoring the formal gardens. That doesn't mean it is in the state of restoration! It's wonderful NOW!
This was the first time we had ever heard of the Inn & Shelburne Farms but we will be singing their praises! And hoping to return again as soon as possible.

Room Tip: Read the descriptiions carefully as all the rooms are different and the prices reflect this!

This was our first trip to Shelburne Farms-what a gorgeous place to relax in. The Inn has a breathtaking vista of Lake Champlaine; the grounds were designed by Olmstead-simply beautiful.
Now, we stayed on the third floor and it was pretty warm; I would recommend the second floor if you are going when it is hot.
Dinner at the restaurant was very good, as was the service.
The porches and grounds are a wonderful place to relax in the afternoons, and they have some great microbrew selections!

Room Tip: don't get a third floor room if you are going when it is hot!

We loved this place. The scenery is beautiful & the lake very tranquil. The Inn in itself is quite remarkable, history everywhere & the rooms we had were enormous. One massive problem for us was the heat in the room. Despite 2 portable & 1 overhead fan it was utterly stifling through the night. Thought the restaurant food was very good.

having stayed at shelburne twice a summer for roughly a decade and having considered the inn one of my favorite places on earth, i was terribly disappointed with my recent visit. the attitudes of staff ( mostly negative ) was pervasive throughout the weekend and in sharp contrast to the atmosphere i had come to expect. my room the first night was directly above the restaurant parking lot and i was plagued with sounds of kitchen staff, cars coming and going, horn blasts ( ! ) and headlights. the manager was kind enough to find me a wonderful room for the next night and to "comp" me for the first sleepless night. this was much appreciated and i faced my second day with optimism. sadly, the sunday morning staff was surly and it took requests to four employees to finally get some bread form a continental service, promised at seven am, which finally was brought out a half hour later. i had to chuckle when i overheard ( from my room! ) a waitress tell a little girl at her table who had requested a hard-boiled egg that they dont do hard-boiled eggs, but she could have a hard-poached egg .... ???? huh ??? summed up my impression that shelburne farms is no longer all about kindness and service .... not sure what's changed to make the staff so unfriendly but will have to think long and hard about returning to this long-cherished family destination.

Room Tip: avoid the tower room if you wish to sleep with windows open ...

Elegant and beautiful, a trip to this inn is truly like going back to another era. While there are no televisions, pool, spa or room service it is very luxurious in it's own way. Afternoon tea, meals in a lovely formal dining room, large library, spacious rooms filled with antiques and a breathtaking lake view all make it a special place. The service is excellent and the food, all farm-fresh, is delicious. Canoes and kayaks sit at the edge of the lawn on the shore of the lake and the long, wide, winding roads are perfect for walking or running. We enjoyed sitting on one of the wide covered porches near the end of the day and just poking around. We also spent quite a bit of time in the billiards room. We're looking forward to another visit before the Summer is over.
