“Phineas Swann - Well Worth going out of your way for!”
Reviewed 30 July 2012

Our English Setters have never felt more welcome at an inn, nor have we humans! If you're a pet lover and enjoy staying at WONDERFUL B&Bs, then Phineas Swann is the place for you! The Riverhouse is specifically where my husband and I stayed with our two pooches, and it is charming, extremely pet-friendly, quiet, cozy and so well-stocked you'd think you were home. We lacked for nothing. From the customized (and apparently delicious) dog treats, to the delicious home-made human treats of home baked cookies to energize yourself in the afternoon, to the waffles and pancakes we started our days with, the proprietors and staff at Phineas Swann couldn't have done anything more to make us feel more welcome. This hidden jewel, located between Jay and Stowe is well worth the visit. We hope our travels take us there again someday as you just can't beat the adorable collection of antiques and exquisite gardens all topped off with amazing and gracious hospitality. When your visit is complete, there is a delightful suprise that awaits you at check out - but we're not going to reveal - you'll need to visit yourself to find out! Thank you to all at Phineas Swann for making our stay so enjoyable!

My husband and I just returned from a two night stay at the Riverhouse suite of the Inn and we will definately return. The setting on the Trout River was quiet and picturesque, and the suite itself was fantastic, with plenty of room to accomodate us along with our dog. The icing on the cake was the tremendous hospitality of the staff of the Inn, from the handyman, housekeepers, and Inn Keepers, John and Jay. A wonderful pet friendly/people friendly experience.

We stayed here 2 nights in July 2012 - first night was part of a Bike Vermont tour (which is how we learned about the inn), second night was on our own at the end of the bike trip. Sort of in the middle of nowhere (super quiet) - 1 1/2 hr from Burlington, but close to smaller towns in Vt and very close to Jay Peak - ski resort (we took tram to top of mountain and hiked down - would do it the opposite next time - hiking down was too hard). Key selling points were - super friendly staff - Jay and John and Jay's sister Jennie (offered extra services like laundry and driving us to Burlington airport - hugh help), dog friendly, super comfie bed (needed step stool to get onto bed)! Decor was a nice mix of modern with old fashioned cozy Vermont Inn. Lots of dog chotchies! They make personalized dog biscuits for dogs staying at the inn! Good (human) treats in main house lounge - candy, cookies, snacks, coffee. They have a variety of room sizes from small to larger suite size. We stayed in the Terrier Suite both nights - very comfortable, but a bit small - no dresser and very little surface space, but had a nice bench at foot of bed to put suitcases on. Comfie tub/shower. My parents stayed in the Green Mtn Suite which was much roomier with 2 bedrooms and a sitting/living room. We had dinner as part of the bike trip (not offered usually) and breakfasts both stays - all food was excellent. I would highly recommend the Phineus Swan Inn.

Room Tip: Rooms on upper floor of Carriage House (Terrier Suite and Green Mountain suite) had more light than...

My best friend and I spent five nights at the Phineas Swann and we could not have been more pleased with our stay! The inn is fantastic due to the care and pride that the innkeepers have for their home. Jay and John go the extra mile in everything they do, especially with scrumptous breakfasts! The inn is beautifully decorated with tons of antiques and all things Vermont. They always have snacks and beverages for you, they have a library full of DVDs, they allow you to make yourself at home on the property, but also always have suggestions for you if you want to venture out. They know the area well as well as most of the business owners around town. My friend and I especially enjoyed the gazebo, where we could sit and read, surrounded by the lush, beautiful gardens without being disturbed by the bugs. We also really liked the fire pit down by the Trout River...we sat there and read for almost a whole day...it was peacefull with the firing buring and the sounds of passing river. If you are looking to get away from the chaos of life, I could not recommend a better place to visit than the Phineas Swann. John and Jay will take care of all your needs. You will arrive as a guest, but will leave as a friend!

Room Tip: If you are into the paranormal, stay in the Red Room....nothing scary, just a playful little girl wh...

It was by chance that we ended up staying here. We couldn't find a hotel room in the Burlington area, saw the Phineas Swann online, liked what we saw and decided to give a try. It was divine intervention! From the moment we walked inside, we were treated like family, not guests. The decor captured everything one would expect from a VT B&B, i.e. country antiques, rustic, clean, etc. After being shown around the common areas and made to feel at home, we went to our room (The Green Room) and were delighted by its romantic charm, cleaniness, nice bathroom, etc. It was obvious the owners were not spend-thrifts when restoring the inn, especially the rooms and bathrooms. We had a wonderful dinner at Bernies and saved 10% by staying at the inn. When we came back to the room, we passed out on the pillow-top bed! Breakfast was to-die-for! From the presentation, to the fresh cut lilies on the table, to being offered extra pancakes, I don't believe we could have found a restaurant which could have offered a nicer meal.
This place is a 'must stay' when coming to northern VT. Don't let the distance from Burlington scare you away. You will throughly enjoy the scenic drive to Montgomery and find things to do when you get up here. Plus, isn't the whole idea 'to get away' anyway!
