“Don't stay in the townhouses”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 January 2012

Note: ratings are based on the room in the main house when we upgraded.

We grabbed a Groupon for one of the townhouses. Read a few bad things online about it online but I figured, it's the Equinox, how bad could it be. The Groupon was for $199 a night. This dump was worth about $19 a night. They do warn you they are not refurbished, but they don't tell you if the people next door pass gas, you'll hear it. Our 1 year old was up all night due to the people above us just going about their business. The establishment should be ashamed of themselves.

We did ask for a new room and they accommodated us with no fuss. Another $50 a night and we had a beautiful room in the main house. Great place, very family friendly, nice rooms, very cozy and close to Stratton and Bromley. Lots to do in town too. We do recommend The Equinox, they just need to bulldoze the dumps they have in the back.

Like the previous reviewer, we stayed in the townhouses as part of a Groupon deal. We travelled with another couple, so we were able to confirm that both townhouses were similarly run-down and disappointing. The decor and quality were akin to anything you'd find at a cheap hotel/motel chain. Our room had a massive water stain on the ceiling and cracks in the walls, trim was missing on the laminate bathroom counter, both sinks shot water sideways, and one light bulb was out. In our friends' room, the shower head was stained green. The sheets were clean and the staff were friendly, but that's about all that it had going for it. Suffice to say that there was no hint of "luxury" in the experience outside of the main Inn. We still felt a little hoodwinked and ripped off, even at 50% of the standard price. Next time, I'll go back to the Inn at Manchester, where we've had two amazing stays.

We ventured to The Equinox for a three night stay after I purchased a Groupon getaway deal.

Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly and helpful staff. We received our keys and headed to our rooms in the "townhouses". Each townhouse has three rooms Two below and one above. The above rooms feature larger space, a kitchen sitting room and fireplace.

So, upon getting to our room, it was obvious that they need a substantial renovation. Apparently, the main house (which is a very large series of connected buildings) has recently be renovated, and looks quite nice from what I could see.

The room we had was very dated, probably not changed since the early 90's. The bed was INCREDIBLY creaky, and as became noticeable later, the walls and ceiling provide almost zero noise insulation. We were ready to head to bed around 10 pm and after turning off the old 20" tube television (for the price of this place they really need to update these) we noticed the noise coming from above. Some people had gathered together for drinks (not a party, just conversation, etc.) and we could hear almost everything they were saying. They weren't trying to be loud or being obnoxious, it was just simply a matter of the poor construction of the building.

After an hour, I couldn't take it anymore so I called the front desk to ask if we could switch to another room. Of course, they said they didn't have anything available but would put a note on my account to be moved tomorrow. They then offered to send over to Security to request the people to be quiet. I felt very bad for having to resort to this, but I was very tired from a long drive and just wanted to sleep so I agreed to their suggestion. After Security arrived the group disbanded and everything was quiet.

I should also mention the front desk told us our room had a "patio". In reality, it was just a cement pad where the air conditioning units were. They had put out a couple of chairs to create this "patio". It was so loud out there when the A/Cs were on that I couldn't imagine wanting to spend any time there.

The next day we went to the front desk and mentioned that there should be a note on the account to switch rooms (there was no note). So I explained what had happened the previous night. Thankfully, they agreed to switch us to one of the above room suites. Also, thankfully, they did not ask us for additional funds for the service.

The suite was about twice as big as the previous room we had and it was apparent immediately that it was much quieter. The kitchen was adequate, but there was dirty pots and pans that we did not want to use. The bed did not creak. In other words, it was better but still not that impressive.

Pros:
Decent location. Manchester has many outlet stores, which I was not aware of until getting there. Good restaurants in the area (Ye Olde Tavern was great). Picturesque grounds and located at the base of a mountain, which provided nice views. Very nice pool house and spa (it's in its own external building so you will have to walk outdoors to get there). We didn't have any spa treatments, so I can't review that. The change room was quite amazing, one of the nicest I've been in, with free robes, sandals, shaving cream, cologne, etc and a locker for clothes and valuables. The salt water pool was huge but kind of chilly. There's a hot tub outside the pool building.

Cons:
Service over the phone before arriving was not very good. I had been told incorrectly that all townhouse room have a kitchen (based on the website I suspected this to be false).
The decor is very dated, tiny old TV, creaky bed, poor construction and noise insulation.
Manchester has very few places that serve a late breakfast. We ended up driving to Rutland to a great place (Maple Sugar & Vermont Spice) that we had gone to before. It was about a 40 minute drive one way.
Also, there doesn't seem to be enough parking for the Townhouse buildings. The first night after returning from dinner we had to park about 50 ft. away at another lot because it was so full.

All-in-all, I wouldn't recommend staying here. We would have rather spent our money on a nice bed & breakfast instead.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the townhouses, if you can manage it. If you have to stay in the townhouses, get seco...
