“TJ Maxx quality for top dollar”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2012 via mobile

Dear Equinox,
I have dreamed of staying with you ever since I was a grad student in Burlington. I have eagerly anticipated your tradition of fine service and well-preserved historic property. Allow me to point out several things you could be doing better, (and no, GM, I don't wish to discuss these things further. You should know better.). When checking in during the 3 o'clock hour, I had to wait 15 minutes in line while the ONE staff member at the front desk dealt with high maintenance guest drama after drama. It was a ridiculous start to my stay. Once I finally entered the hotel, I was disappointed by the soulless TJ Maxx-esque decor of the common areas. Really boring, bland, and lacking in personality. There is just no excuse for hanging the same giant reproduction historic photograph on multiple floors -- it gives a Printed in China cheapness to the whole establishment. Note to Maintenence: Florescent light bulbs now come in varieties that don't make a room look like a morgue for the first ten minutes after you turn them on. Also, your loungers by the pool are mottled and desperately in need of teak oil. And why are all the outside loungers oriented to look at the ugly building with concrete chimneys instead of the glorious mountain behind your property? Finally, the family changing room at the pool is an aesthetic punishment for anyone silly/unfortunate enough to bring kids to the Equinox. My room was comfy and my dinner tasty, but it is attention to detail that should set your property apart from others.

This was our second stay at the Equinox. The natural beauty, adjacent hiking trails & spa/pool make the stay a wonderful experience. Although this last visit had us counting the minutes until check-out, every moment we were in our room. Our reservation was lost at check-in and we were crammed into a VERY small room with 2 queen beds ( we traveled with our 2 children ). After opening luggage, I scarcely had room to walk. The room and bath were unclean. Stains on the linen and duvet covers, hair on the toilet, raised carpet "globs". Overall simply dirty. We asked for another room ( as we had a 4 night stay ) and were given a larger room over the Marsh Tavern. By 11pm each eve, the noise abated so we could sleep. The room boasted the same filth as the one prior with the added bonus of a clogged sink. So sad, such a great historic property with amazing potential….if only they could find better housekeeping and reservation services.

The hotel itself is grand, beautiful and in a lovely Vermont setting. While we enjoyed our visit, we felt the hotel needs to strongly improve in some areas, especially housekeeping and staffing.

Most importantly the attention to detail and basic housekeeping. While our room appeared to be clean, closer examination revealed that the room was not vacuumed prior to our arrival as we spotted different debrise on the carpet. There were hairs in the bathtub and sink. Yuck! There were spots on the wall by the headboard and also on doors and door trim. The sheets had stains which had not washed away. The striped duvet had a white, crusty stain on it. The wood trim had nicks and scratches in a lot of places. The windows had finger marks. Overall, the room had a not so clean feel. They really need to revamp their housekeeping!!

Also, we sat a the bar fire pit and after an hour and no one approached us regarding ordering drinks! We were not the only ones outraged. They are seriously understaffed!

Moreover, I got pink eye after opening my eyes under water in the pool.

I suppose, we would come back to this hotel, but would not recommend to friends/family. We would also bring a big box of Clorox wipes and not use the pool (shouldn't have to do that in a "luxury" hotel paying luxury prices).

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Your comments are very valuable to us, as they help us to pinpoint areas that require our increased attention. I am truly sorry that you did not have an exceptional experience at the Equinox. It is our goal to create an absolutely perfect visit for each of our guests, and clearly we fell short of that for you. We happened upon Equinox by chance... as we toured through Vermont. Best "accident" in a while!! The dining room was exceptional and the staff equally exceptional. Great OLD building with lots of history yet able to pamper every desire!! If Manchester Vt is your destination... consider this location!

Room Tip: Not a lot "to do" in the immediate area... Vt is pretty rural, but if you enjoy rural this...

My wife and I stayed at the Equinox in the Townhouses earlier this month on a Groupon discount. I think we would have been OK with the accommodations had our expectations not been set by AAA's 4-diamond rating.

On the positive side, the grounds are lovely and the recreation opportunities (spa, indoor pool, golf, hawk training, and fishing), although we didn't use them, seemed to be excellent. The Colonnade breakfast dining area is beautiful. Common areas were clean and well kept. The front desk and concierge were polite and helpful. Our room, a Deluxe King, was clean.

On the negative side, our room, although supposedly recently renovated, was sparsely decorated and seemed old. There were no curtains on the windows (see picture) and the shades let in a lot of light in the morning even though we had a western exposure. There were no pictures on the walls and no drawers in which to put our belongings (there were some shelves, including some behind doors). There were lamps by the bedside, but no lighting elsewhere except in the bathroom. There were no extra towels and no bathrobes, although the bath towels were over-sized. Nothing was dingy, but by the same token, the room was not very inviting.

Service was spotty. We asked for extra towels the first night, and they were delivered while we were away. However, our door was not closed properly, so it remained unlocked and anyone could have entered the room. We left our towels on the floor the next morning and expected them to be replaced with the same number of towels as were used, but found only two towels upon our return to the room later in the day. We called again for extra towels and they were delivered. We left them on folded neatly on a chair in the room when we left for dinner, but found them removed by turn-down service when we returned. One could say, generously, they were too efficient, but it was clear that communication was lacking among the service staff. In addition, in the entry-way outside our room, a line of drinking glasses remained on the floor for the entire two days of our visit.

Overall, we were happy to have had a Groupon rate of $185, and at that rate, the experience was worthwhile. At normal rates, the Townhouses at the Equinox seem quite over-priced.
