Common Sense Cafe

Description: It is also known as Yellow Deli. Because there are so few restaurants in Island Pond, and this one is very good, people should know about it. Also, wonderfully wacky decor!

This place had the best Reuben sandwich
Everything home made, in store. I guess the owner of the building upped their rent and ran them out of business. Really makes no sense, there's very few places to eat in town. They own the clothing business across the street, and word is they're going to move the deli there? That's what I was told anyway. I hope so.

We went to have lunch here and discovered it was closed. It was very good when open--last year friends and I had a nice lunch here, and we anticipated the same in 2015. Alas, no more.

This cafe/deli (Also known as The Yellow Deli) is part of an international community of faith-based businesses. First, the fare: sandwiches, baked goods, salads, coffees/teas, and modest prices. Everything is straightforward, fresh, and decently presented. You can't do a lot better in a place like Island Pond, which is close to being the end of civilization.

Some people might be put off by the religious affiliation, but the food is served without a sermon. The staff is willing to talk about their community if asked. This is a form of Christianity which tries to strip away the pretense and artifact of organized religion and to glorify the virtues of simple, human contact. They share their financial resources, eat meals communally, and claim unity as their highest priority. I'm wary of religious sects, but as described in their Twelve Tribes free newspaper, I found their beliefs to be as palatable as the Reuben sandwich that I ordered for lunch.

Cool artsy decor. Some of the best home fries I've ever had just because they were so different. Worth the long wait for food as it was all delicious. Excellent homemade breads and pastries. Let's face it, there's not a lot of choices up this way for restaurants, but this is a special place in the kingdom and worth a try.

Recently visited Common Sense for the first time, lunch with friends, and was pleasantly surprised to have an excellent Reuben Sandwich--the best I have had in some time. All of the other luncheon companions were pleased as well with their order. The waitress was efficient, the atmosphere pleasant, and the restaurant clean. My order was half a sandwich and a cup of soup--I would have rated the restaurant 5 stars based on the Reuben, but found the soup OK but not outstanding. I certainly would return, however, in the future--just to have another sandwich (and this time order a WHOLE one!)
