In addition to the artwork in the Center's temporary exhibitions, all of which is for sale, The Bennington also has a very impressive permanent collection of Native American art (Navajo rugs, pots, katsinas, paintings of and by Native Americans) as well as bird carvings by Master Carver Floyd Scholz. The Bennington is also home to the Covered Bridge Museum. Visitors of all ages enjoy the exhibits and videos and use the information gathered to better enjoy their travels through these famous structures as they travel through Vermont.

We very much enjoyed this museum. It is in a lovely country setting and features some impressive and lifelike wildlife art. The wooden sculptures of birds are fascinating. There is a gallery ]of contemporary Native American crafts and pottery, but my favorite collection was the sculptures of Native American historical characters and their stories. The detail work of the faces and the emotions they captured was amazing. There is also a covered bridge museum with photographs and models of area bridges and their histories. The gift shop offers beautiful and unusual items and the staff is friendly and helpful.

When we visited on a Saturday Afternoon the place was almost deserted. I have no idea why. The animal carvings by Floyd Scholz were amazing, and the Native American art was the sort of thing that is rarely seen. Add in the interesting section on covered bridges and other exhibits and this is well worth a visit.

THE museum includes an eclective collection of paintings, sculptures and history of covered bridges. In the covered bridge section one can use the research content to search by state for covered bridge info. That section also celebrates Eric Sloan, his art and literary work surrounding early American life. There is an animal sculpture section, Native American section, and several other shows. The day we visited included a Contemporary Masters show which was excellent.

This made for really fun afternoon. Even the permanent exhibits of Native American art, bird carvings and covered bridges are quite interesting and well done.

Make sure to take time to walk around the grounds to see the various sculptures.

Driven by here lots, saw the sign for "Eric Sloan" out front, but never stopped here until today. Am I glad I did. They display 8 Sloan paintings including "October Cloudscape" that knocked my socks off!! Also available is a video about Sloan that is excellent (about 30 minutes). In it he explains some of his methods and painting philosophy. He was a speed demon and racked up some 15,000 paintings, most painted in one day and most of those completed before lunch. An added bonus is the exhibit of Floyd Scholz bird carvings that are out of this world. Other galleries contain local artists and the frequent competition. The Sloan paintings are in the covered bridge section where there is a lot of covered bridge material presented: old photos, models, construction techniques, and reference info for covered bridges in Vermont and other states (and also Europe). The museum store does not have much but you can buy some Sloan books there.
