“Exquisite food, great service”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

We stopped in and the restaurant was packed. The manager was very gracious and let us order wine while we waited, and even found a table for us. The food was AMAZING- fresh, innovative, delicious- a true feast for the senses. This is a do not miss.

“Could be great”
Reviewed 29 February 2012

I've revisited Communal several times now for lunch and have been disappointed that it still has not risen to the level that it should be able to achieve. There's a lot of promise to this restaurant, but a few things are holding it back.

First the good. Attractive dining space in a prime location in Provo's downtown district. Intention to provide a unique dining experience (particularly for the area). Part of a broader effort to bring "foodie" sensibility to Utah Valley (part of the Heirloom Restaurant Group including related restaurant Pizzeria 712 and things like cooking classes, local sourcing, and other food events).

Now the bad. It's hard to define, but there is something "off" about the service and overall attitude of the place that almost invariably kills the experience for me. This is downtown Provo, for heaven's sake, I do not expect my waiter to cop an attitude. If I ask what boulangerie potatoes are (knowing what the word boulangerie means, no less) don't act like I'm some sort of cretin for asking. Smile occasionally. Share some enthusiasm for the food. Make suggestions. The staff give off a "I'm miserable and don't want to be here" vibe that really detracts from the experience. Or maybe they've been told that finer dining means aloof, stiff service.

Other downsides are a small dining space that makes it hard to have a private conversation and an open kitchen concept that exposes the diner to the "belly of the beast." The latter is fine, but only if the folks in the kitchen realize they are on display and act accordingly.

It will be interesting to see if Communal evolves further into a restaurant that can deliver a complete fine dining experience. The appearance of other food-centered restaurants in the area (such as the Black Sheep Cafe across the street) may make Communal up its game. As of right now, I think they have an enthusiastic following of core patrons but are not looking at themselves honestly and seeking to broaden their base of support in the community. Frankly, it's not that big a deal to drive north of the Point of the Mountain and tap into the wide array of restaurant choices in Salt Lake valley, which is what my husband invariably suggests we do when I ask if he'd like to have dinner at Communal.

“Not going back”

Very expensive and microscopic portions! We spent $12 on a appetizer that literally took one bite to eat! Everything is a la cart so you have to pay for your baked potato etc.

“A Treat for the Tastebuds”
Reviewed 2 December 2011

The Commune is a small and charmingly quaint restaurant. If you want a private booth, this is not the place. While there are individual tables there are also times when you are seated at a large table with other guests. All the merrier. We have only been to breakfast, several times, but everything we try on each occasion is absolutely divine. The food is cooked to perfection with every mouthful being a treat for the tastebuds. Delicious. Excellent service. A bit pricey, but worth every penny. And you make friends while sharing a table if the need arises. Who can beat that! They do take reservations, are closed Sunday and Monday, but offer Breakfast, lunch and dinner with a brunch offered on Saturdays. Dinners are ala carte and a bit out of our price range, but we hear the food is spectacular. Guess we will have to save up for that experience.
