Kodachrome Basin State Park
Reviewed 5 September 2012

Kodachrome Basin provides yet another unique geological formation--67 rock "pipes" unlike any others on earth. Although the park isn't huge and the views are not as overpowering as Zion or Bryce, they are beautiful and they provide yet more insight into the violent upheavals undergone by our planet millions of years ago. If you enjoy learning about the uplifting of the Colorado plateau and the formation of the unique topography of the SW, then take the time to go to this park. If, after seeing the major parks, you consider it all to be "rocks" then you should probably take a pass.

We visited this Park accidently, because a hotel in this park was booked for us, due to busy hotels nearer to Bryce Canyon.
Although it's small and not as overwhelming compared to Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, etc., it was a pleasent surprise to us.
It offers colorfull landscapes and nice trails. We walked the relatively easy trail towards the Shakespeare Arch and the Sentinel. Although this trail is only accessible using a dirt road, this is no problem for an ordinary car when it's not raining.
Don't forget to look at the Bryce Canyon cliffs from below in the West!

After a disappointing cabin at Bryce Canyon Lodge, we LOVED the cabin at Kodachrome Basin State Park. Unpretentious with an amazing view from each cabin front porch. Mattresses were good, though we would have preferred queen size to doubles (the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5). A/C worked well (it was in the 90's); microwave and fridge. VERY QUIET. Four of the 6 cabins were occupied as were perhaps 1/4 of the camp sites (1/2 mile away). It was by far the most peaceful place we stayed. And they included a very simple continental breakfast in the morning (coffee, juice, cereal, milk, muffins/sweet rolls). And all at a very reasonable price (1/2 of the price of Bryce).

Remember to buy groceries for lunch and dinner in nearby towns before arriving; very limited groceries available at the park store and very limited hours as well.

Room Tip: All 6 looked fine; probably a slight advantage to being one of the 2 end units, especially the one f...

We stayed 2 nights at the campground and did some hiking at Willis Creek (very cool!) and around the park. It was really hot in the daytime (105 degrees) so we didn't get out on the longer trails but Shakespeare Arch and Chimney Rock were nice. The campground was clean and flat, but really dusty when the wind blew. The showers were great! There is a store that has basic needs at a reasonable price. Most of the people camping near us were there to go to Bryce. I wish I would have known about this campground when I went there last year. We went to Tropic for breakfast on the way out and had really good French toast and pancakes at the restaurant there. I forget the name but it was attached to the grocery store and should be easy to find on the main road.

We were traveling UT SR12 to get from Bryce to Torrey for Capital Reef so we decided to take a short detour: a side trip to the Kodachrome Basin SP. Now, I wouldn't say go out of your way to go there, but if you are on 12 anyway and come thruogh Cannonville, it is well worth a visit indeed
On this particular day we only wanted to do a relaxing, short hike which would not be strenuous at all. Thus after perusing the map we were given at the admission booth, I suggested we do the 1.5-mile Angels Palace trail. A good choice, as on this short stretch this trail offers it all. It first winds through a little canyon, then leads up to a small plateau from which you have a grand view of the soaring rock wall with all its colors, across the plain as far as the rim of Bryce on the far horizon. There are several great points for photography and some more WOW-ing. The trail is easy and well marked, and very, very pretty.
