We stayed all day and absolutely loved every minute of it. We toured the four dwellings built by four different generations of the pioneering family (furnished log dog trot, farm house, grand Victorian house, and the large 1930's house.) The family was one of the first in the area, and it's still a working ranch. Lots of history and a great experience for a city slicker. Since it's a living history museum, you'll see docents in period costume roping steer, baking bread, quilting, etc. They're very friendly and knowledgable about the family and the property. Not to be missed, if you're there at the right time, is Tea under a big tree, dripping with Spanish Moss. They really outdo themselves with scones, sandwiches, pasties, etc. Loved it! For almost two hours we traveled back in time and felt like visiting dignitaries. Can't believe how affordable the tea was - great value! In short, we LOVED our day at George Ranch. Nice visitor center and gift shop, plus plenty of free parking. Can walk the property or take the free tractor pulled trailer that makes continuous rounds from place to place. Should definitely be on your Houston Itinerary.
