“Absolutely the Best in Port A”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2012

We have been dining at the VHP for about 15 years and have never ever been disappointed. We have dined as a couple, with our 2 children (who are now grown) and also with friends. Linda and her staff are like family and we always receive a warm welcome. You must make reservations and if you want Lasagna (served only on Saturdays) you need to reserve it ahead of time. The Lasagna is the best in the world! Second best would be the Alla Madonna Trattoria in Venice that Linda recommended to us. Linda and her late husband, Mauricio, came from Venice so their recipes are authentic Italian. All the pastas are fresh. We have tried most items on the menu and many of the evening specials. We always start with the Misto Mare appetizer and fresh bread with oil. Their ceasar salad has the best dressing anywhere. Excellent choices besides the lasagna are any of their seafood pastas, the portabello stuffed chicken, any evening fish special (and yes it is fresh local fish) and the medallions with gorgonzola sauce. Really anything they prepare is excellent. Linda is very knowledgeable about wine and enjoys helping with your selection. The entire staff really enjoy what they do and appreciate their customers. I just cannot understand why VHP is not #1 on the Trip Advisor list????

“Good - Not gourmet, pricey, seafood not local”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 February 2012

We were visiting friends who live in Port Aransas and took them to dinner at the Venetian Hot Plate. They had eaten there before and were very high and positive about the restaurant, quote “……often rated as one of the best in Texas”. Well, I hope not, or the Texas supply of “best” restaurants is very limited. The service was fine on a crowded Saturday night. While the food was good enough it was not gourmet and it was pricey. For example my spouse had small steak for $32, other main dishes were $28-32 and the least expensive bottle of wine was $39 – it was OK but certainly not worth $39. I had seafood on linguine, $17-20 – and it too was fine tasting, but what surprised me was that the seafood was not local – even in Port Aransas, Texas!! The mussels were most likely from the northeastern US or Canada because the species served was not a local species (I am a professional marine scientist), nor were the clams local (they were a west coast US/Canada species). I could not tell the origin of the shrimp or scallops – I certainly hope they were local. I was very disappointed not to see local seafood in a restaurant less than 1 mile from the beach, estuary and ocean. So overall the meal was tasty enough – no real complaints on the taste, but expensive and, at least for the seafood, took a lot of food miles to get to the Venetian Hot Plate

“Pricy but Great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2012

Everything was fresh and made to order. Cost a bit, but it is worth it ONCE if you are on vacation. Bit of a budget buster if you drink, but not so if you don't.
